Credit goes straight to Sarashi for the controller outline, awesome job. Back cover art from Way of the Pixel user junkboy.
I tried to get every detail of the original Atari boxes down (with some modifications), so while it's not as technical as my other boxes, it's been pretty meticulous, so full-view/printable check is a must. Comments and critiques very much wanted and encouraged. Hope you all like it.
This is so impressive. So stylish. So perfect in every way. Seriously great man, definitely a MasterWorks. And if not, don't blame it on me, because I did my part.
Im sorry this just isnt very good. You didnt use the Red Dead art, you dont have a proper template, and that isn't a screen shot from Read Dead Redemption. Its just poorly made on all fronts. It looks like some retro box. Maybe next time step into modern times.
I love it! The only thing I don't like is the font of "Xbox 360". It seems like so much more of a modern font than the rest of the box, and it throws it off sadly.
Graphics on the back are way too good for an Atari 2600 game. As an Atari collector, I don't think this is authentic looking enough. The fonts aren't quite right, and neither is the layout. And the textured cover is off--2600 boxes had solid colors.
I'm actually in the process of making a retro Red Dead box myself using some old arcade flyers I picked up at a thrift store.
#21, I don't know what you expected me to use for the back screenshot, something out of Custer's Revenge? I didn't make it myself, though I suppose that had I known I'd get knit-picked for that I may have tried to do something myself. It's meant to look like an Atari box, not an Atari GAME. If so, I would've put Atari logos all over the place instead of 360 logos. The fonts are all actual fonts from Atari boxes (except the PLATINUM HITS banner), so I don't know what you mean by not "quite right." The layout is taken directly from the Berzerk box, and the box has the texture because I wanted to make it seem a little worn. And please, I have a lot of respect for you as an artist, but don't come to my post and advertise your own upcoming box. I personally find that both unprofessional and offensive, and I'd appreciate it if you refrained from doing that in the future.
#20, It may seem modern, but it is the regular Bauhaus font used in the old Atari boxes.
#24, It's not advertising unless you leave a link, 7sk. It was an innocuous comment because my box is similar to this one that you're taking personally because I just don't happen to like this box. It wasn't advertising--it was a comment.
Sorry--I'm a huge Atari collector so authenticity in 2600-inspired boxes is a big thing for me. Hell, any type of retro box should always be as authentic as possible.
As for the fonts, you used the 'Atari' font for the title, spine, and other stuff. On actual 2600 boxes, that 'Atari' font was used for one thing: the Atari logo. Some games like Crazy Climber used a variation of the font--it was the same font, but not as tall, but most boxes used a standard typeface for the game title. But not the 'Atari' font. Take a second look at that Berzerk box and you'll see that the title 'BERZERK' is in a different font.
And seeing as this was probably based on that screenshot on the back, I don't see why you didn't opt for a 7800 box. The 7800 was capable of those types of graphics. Furthermore, making 2600 screenshots isn't that hard. Seeing as they were barely representative, it would have been a cinch if you'd just watched some 2600 gameplay as reference. Or you could have taken a screenshot from any number of Western 2600 games--yes, even Custer's Revenge.
I'm of the opinion that retro or retro-inspired boxes should attempt to be as true-to-the-original and authentic as possible. This is a far cry from that because of the Xbox 360 stuff and that 'Platinum Hits' thing on the back.
Don't take it too hard--you can't always blow me away. This is the first time that I didn't immediately fave and gush over one of your boxes. And that's only because I'm a 2600 collector.
#25, The thing is that I never said this was a 2600 cover. It's 360 cover done in a retro style with some modifications. I changed things around if they didn't look good enough. "XBOX 360" in the Atari font looks bad, so I changed it. I didn't make this to look like exactly like an Atari box, I took a new game and did a retro-inspired cover with modern elements and a few slight changes. The back screenshot was more of a joke than anything, I didn't build the box around it. It is NOT a 2600 box. I don't know if you can see past that as a collector, but I did try to be as authentic as I could while also having my own elements.
Honestly, this is okay at best. I don't see why everyone is tripping over themselves for this box. Don't get me wrong, a lot of your boxes have been phenomenal, but meticulous as it may be, I would've rather have seen a more interesting design that was maybe a little less than perfect. This is a huge step down for you. I understand that you were going for the retro look, but I really don't feel like you fully hit the mark.
It is pretty good but I agree with Grand the screenshot doesn't look like an Atari game and if you are going with that theme you should of put an old western Atari game screenshot to replace that. Other than that it looks really good.

Incredible, the design really gives a retro feel, and fits the game perfectly.

Nice job putting your own modern spin on the classic retro design.

Where did you get the screenshot?

Hey guys, thanks for all the good feedback, makes me feel very nice :)
#9, no, I didn't. Took me longer than it should've to find it, but I got it off of Google images.
#12, Way of the Pixel user named junkboy, Kotaku ran an article about him a while back, he made a bunch of 2D screenshots for 3D games.
