So heres my Metroid Prime 3 box that has been long in the making :P As I said in the WiP thread I decided to revisit the PSD for this box, and found out that I merged the layers for the front. So no editing there :/ But I put a lot of effort into the back to make up for the front :P Tell me what you think.
#2 and #4 Yes I know :/ But like I said, this was an older box, the front layers were merged, and after all the work I put into elements of the front (planet, background, ect.) I just didn't want to put this box to waste. If the front bothers you that much, then by all means don't fav, but I can't really change it.
Like I said in the forums, this is really incredible. The front may be unoriginal, but it's way better than the official. The border around the box really works with this box too, fantastic job.
#14, Yes my case's front is very similar to Star's, I'd be foolish to deny it. I admit it's not my best work, could have been much more original with the arrangement of the characters, etc.
I was mainly commenting that you're a bit limited to material when it comes to Metroid games, and a space setting is usually the best outcome, and that Star didn't really come up with the idea so there'd be no reason to 'credit' him. (I know you were trying to be funny, I think?)
#15, No I'm not being funny. One looks almost identical to the other. This one counts too. A different main render on the front changes nothing. Minor changes such as entirely switching up colors and resources is still not enough to take full credit. Not to down play your work, idk how long it took you. Not to mention the same style and concept has been used on a couple other boxes you and a couple others have made. These are good covers but they cross the line from being lightly inspired to heavily. You can do a whole lot with the resources that have been used on these cases. It's not like the original one in this series had a generic layout that anybody could of thought up. A lot of thought went into it and it seems to have inspired many other covers to do the same exact thing.
#16 Hmm well I see where you are coming from dude, but I think that SD is right when he said Star didnt really make anything himself, so there is no reason to credit him. I mean we might as well credit the developers of the game for everything they did, and Nintendo for the wii console, and everyone who inspires ideas for our boxes. See what I mean? Its just not going to happen. But I do credit Star89er for the original layout idea, because it was he that inspired this box.
#16, You're not downplaying my work at all, I'm fine with it. Hell if there's one thing I need to improve on it's probably originality in my designs, something I've been trying to work on for a while.
I agree that the majority of Metroid cases (mine included) have generic layouts, with use of the same old renders/colors/etc, but again I wasn't talking about that so much as the fact that Metroid games are usually limited to space settings, which is what I had originally thought you were talking about when you said to credit Star89er.
One last thing, what are you referring to when you mention the 'original one' that inspired so many other cases?
iirc I think Star89er was the first to post a Metorid Prime box that had the same layout and effects we are talking about. The one I posted and another one he made are the ones I was referring to.
I think he is the main person to credit however. You all after all have admitted that he inspired you. Lets put it this way, if he never made his two boxes, would have yours turned out looking this similar to his original? Probably not, would have looked a whole lot different. Obviously the same setting in space with planets and stars would be there, but that stuff is evident.
Good God the scanlines are unbelievably strong. They definitely need to me either nixes all together or taken down a huge notch. And I also have to agree with Hawt and jevan on the fact that these boxes do all look extremely alike. I'm not trying to step on anyone's feet or piggyback off of what anyone's saying but it's clear as day that Star89er set the precedent for Metroid Prime 3 boxes that everyone has followed. Taking inspiration from someone's work is one thing but I feel like taking the layout and what not is something different. I don't know, like I said, I'm not trying to step on anyone's feet here so take my comment as you wish.
I agree with you on the part about other boxes being inspired by mine, Hawt, however I can't really take credit for the original idea. Both of my boxes were based off of posters that I scanned from an issue of Nintendo Power. I did add a bunch of extra shit to them (more-so on the second one), but the basic layout of both boxes still belong to Retro Studios.

Not bad. But I have to say that the front formation has been done to death for the Metroid boxes.

absolutely hate the back template, but everything else is awesome. +fav

Front is kinda overdone, but I love that back. Faved.

All these Metroid boxes look the same. You guys need to start giving credit to Star89er.

#8 and #9 Thank you both :)

#10, Did Star89er invent the idea of using space/planets for Metroid cases? =/

Love the fact that the front matches perfectly with the back!!

I honestly don't know how you can retort without being incredibly biased in order to defend your own work :\

Seriously, haven't I seen that EXACT front somewhere else before?

#21, Hah, I have that poster (the second one) on a wall in my room right now actually.

#20 They arent that strong...they are at 40% opacity and on Overlay...
#22 Yea...my WiP thread...this shouldnt be anywhere else, I made it. Although SD has a similar front to one of his metroid boxes.

Wow I didn't know Dtar89er's ?boxes we so closesly based on those wallpapers. That clears up a lot of this argument :P

Cool update, the new front is better than before. Leaving just Samus on her own better symbolizes the Metroid series' trademark feeling of seclusion.

#32 Thanks, and lol I had no idea :P I just liked the simplicity.

Finding out that the original one Star89er made is just an edited poster made me go :( :( :(
I thought he assembled it entirely himself.

#34 Yea so did I :/

it looks like it's not done.

#36 What do you mean? Did you see version one of the front? I stepped down from the cluttered front i had before to something more simple.
[ Reply ]
Well personally, I never put scanlines on that strong. I would put them on overlay with a max opacity of 20% but that's just me.

#38 Hmm well I think it gives more of a sci-fi feel, like the hexagons on my mass effect box. But that's your opinion.
