Silent Hill 2, a game so dripping with artistic atmosphere and deep meaning that it makes games like Shadow of the colossus and Metal Gear Solid seem about as deep as Tetris.
Silent Hill is my favorite series ever, and Silent Hill 2 is easily my(and most peoples) favorite. However, I've been dreading this box, not because I didn't want to do it, but because I was never confident I had the skill to make a box to do justice to this game.
As with all my Silent Hill boxes, they are solely intended for hardcore fans of the series, I try and cram the boxes with the atmosphere of the games as well as little references from within the game as well. I'm sure any fan of this game will be able to understand what the image on the front means. James looking into the mirror and seeing his reflection as Pyramid Head.
I made the front from real life pictures, textures, an image of James from the game, and a possible fan made image of Pyramid Head.
The back was made from a picture of supposedly Taluca Lake, blended with some textures to make it seem like a photograph, and the red squares were made by me. The text by all the characters are personal quotes from the game, and are intentionally hard to read, when you complete the game they should all make sense. The text at the top I made so it's impossible to read, but if you've dug deep enough into the story you'll understand it.
Like I said, this box is for the fans, that's why there is no description of what the game is about, no list of features, no advertisements, just a tag line, some screenshots, and the legal info because I still like my games to look somewhat official for shelf purposes.
Anyway, here's the box I've wanted to make since I joined, but was too afraid of, and it's not at all like I originally planed, but when the idea for the front came to my head I had to do it. Comments are greatly appreciated, even if you're just showing your love for this series.
I can not believe such an amazing box is being ignored. Maybe it's just a slow day, but still. This is not right. I wish I could fav+ this again. Just so others know how awesome this is!
While I value the references, there is a ton of implied spoilers on this box. Anyone who reads it would likely be able to figure out the main gist of the game's plot. I definitely don't approve of that.
I really like that it's a Silent Hill 2 box from a fan, though. Too many Silent Hill 2 boxes that are just images and filters and such with no real love behind them. I feel your pain, I've had the same deal going for me. SH2 is one of my favorite games, and I've been wanting to do a box for a long time. I've got an unfinished one that I'm going to revisit later that hopefully will live up to my expectations.
#7, Yo mean different from my other 2? Yeah, I know, but Silent Hill 2 is the different one so I thought it was ok.
#9, It may be spoilerish, but the front idea was too good for me to pass up, I was thinking of getting rid of the text around the characters though, would that be a better idea?
Thanks for the comments everyone, I'd really like to hear from more fans of the game how they like this though. : )
oh would you look at that, a box popped up in random. To bad I can't fav it again. But I must say, this does need some more attention. But this is the last time I'm doing this, because if no-one wants to show appreciation, you can't force them.
I really really like this! The only thing I can say is that the text at the top of the back is really hard to read, and although I like the writing on the save points, I don't know what I think about using them on the back. I kind of like it, but I don't know if it's the best idea cause that save point is like the last thing you see before you fight the final boss... otherwise, faved!
You should check out the Silent hill box I just put up and tell me what you think! I'd appreciate your input!
#15, Thanks, but the save point is everywhere in the game, not just before the last boss. And the hard to read text I made impossible to read on purpose, I'm sure if you stare at it long enough you could guess what it says, but the point is to NOT read it. : P
After returning to this box, I have to say it definitely lives up to my standards. I don't know why I didn't favorite it before. You're definitely one of the few cover artists who does the Silent Hill series justice.
