Everything here is custom drawn, including the template. Thanks a lot to everyone who helped with this. Especially KoopaDasher, a big thanks to you man, couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy!
I said it in the Matchup thread, and I'll say it again. The biggest shortcoming of this box is the lack of distinction between line thicknesses. Typically, in Mario art, the lines that outline the major body areas, like the arms, hands, hat, etc, are thicker than those around the eyes, the mouth, the overalls, the fingers, etc. It just adds a bit of depth to the image, and you're missing it, and it's keeping it from looking really awesome. The other suggestion that I have goes along with what dmshaposv said, that the composition isn't quite there. By that, I mean the placement of your items, powerups, etc, is a bit random, and doesn't really go along with the game. I know you're not a Mario fan (that it evident from the fact that you gave the Power Mushroom a speckled dot pattern, when every Mario mushroom has only three spots), but in that case you would do well to do a bit of research on the game, or ask around. The placement of the items and such just makes the overall image look random.
I think, that if the lines would have been thicker, it would look pretty much as the official art, right now it looks a little bit more fan-made, which is good.
This is incredible even if it wasn't hand drawn but that fact makes it that much better. I also think that the fact that it's hand drawn actually makes it look official. Like a lot of people use HQ renders that are 3D for SNES boxes and you would never see that in actuality but your box looks really legit. This is probably better than the actual Super Mario World box. Great job, really. I didn't know we had so many people who can draw so well on VGBA. I'm curious to know where you got the screen shots because the one all the way to the right definitely isn't from at least the US version of Super Mario World. That doesn't take away from the box, just a matter of curiosity.
#31 Well it was hard to find three highres screenshots for the game, so I found 2 nice sized ones that I liked, then the third is a Japanese screenshot that I edited to fit.
I think I can concur with 36 that the red temp does give it an N64 flavor if that's what he's referring to. I also this this box does lend itself rather well to New Super Mario Bros as well since they easily could've done a retro look with that box. It's certainly retro though, no doubt. I would love to see this on a store shelf.
#44 Not really, first I edited the image in a bunch of different places, then I started tracing it piece by piece with the pen tool. Once I got everything traced (a bunch of different layers) I started filling everything with color on a separate layer (underneath so it looks smooth). Once everything had color I took a soft brush and shaded everything in. Sounds simple but the whole globe took me around 9 hours.
Amazing dude.

Great work man. Everything from your red SNES template, to the layout, and of course the drawings, are top notch.

Your best, by far. Great job here Del.

Though composition/finesse wise it doesn't quite touch what Koopa did with his SM3 box, it is there in terms of technical perfection and ambition.
+fav.

Amazing, it must have been so difficult tracing that image of the globe on the back. Can you post a tutorial on how to trace for custom art?
