Here's part 1 of 2 of my 2-box project, Prohibited Art. :)
Countless hours were spent designing to fine tuning the box...sigh...it's worth it though. Now I'm proud to present my most beautiful box yet as the game is also the most beautiful game I've played in terms of story, music, art style, presentation etc etc...
Tons of image editing went for both front and back. I wanted to portray that awe inspiring feel of seeing a colossus for the first time. Indeed, rendering the logo is a task almost as hard as slaying a colossus, lol. The aspect of light is vital to appreciating this box and it's beauty though, as in the game itself. And I hope you can appreciate both the simplicity and beauty of what I was going for this time. Major thanks to DMS for excellent advice on this one, as well as the people in the WIP thread. Thanks and enjoy! ;)
-LK
P.S. Hunter, I've decided to name it so, because that's what the game's setting is pretty much. The land the wanderer came to was one that was forbidden. It was also very beautiful to behold, hence - Prohibited Art. :)
I think it would've been cool if you came up with your own arrangement for the back instead of using the official one, I know you've done this before but I think even one of the best artists here can stretch themselves further.
Looks great.. nicely done, although I think it's too much like the original.. with almost the same front, and the back with the same 3 circular screenshots and a firey circular description set up identical text layout.
Great work LK! I think you've really captured the overall feeling of the game quite nicely. I think that making this box too intricate makes a false impression for what the game really is, so yes...simplicity is good! +fav
I received pretty much the same critcisms for my SotC box.
I guess you could blame me, but I edged LK to go for a sparse design mainly because that is vital to the feel of the game. I think he pulled off the light aspect wonderfully on the front cover. Considering how limited the material is and how ridiculously hard it is to render that logo, a lot of elements of this box come together fantastically and are executed with finesse. Wanderer has been implemented as the focal point with light shining on him, and the juxtaposition of the scales works effectively.
I do agree that it could've been a good time to try a new style for a back layout and I've critcized LK on remodelling back covers like originals before, but this layout style pretty much defines the ethreal feel of the game...and well I've got no room to talk since I literally did the same even for my SotC box.
All in all, it may not be one of LK's best boxes. But its still a very well made box.
Thanks DMS for the great comment. I definitely agree that it's no easy task to make an SotC box. :)
At the end of the day, I'm very satisfied with how this turned out. Not only do I consider this my most beautiful box yet, but also one of my finest actually. I simply refuse to sacrifice the beauty that this box has now for more "originality." If you check, I designed it in the same style, but it definitely is different. It is folly to consider that one or two parts taken would make it the same. And even then, I spent much time enhancing/modifying them.
It's true that I could have been more "original" about the design. And trust me, I considered doing that. However, I've also made it my own in the process. To do anything else that would compromise this design's beauty and feel would not only betray my respect for design, but also my passion of this game. And I refused to do both. ;)
I like it, but it's not your best. I don't like how you put the text in that circle, because it makes the back seem plain, and that circle sticks out like a soar thumb. Also, like E_G, I expected something more original.
The thing is though LK it's possible to portray this game in the right way and make it more original, especially with the back. I don't consider that a compromise or a sacrifice but rather an enhancement.
To be honest I don't find the low saturated look of this game to be beautiful but I'm not saying you shouldn't stay true to the game. Your box though.
#19, Thanks qwerty. I really like the feel of it also. ;)
E_G, I simply decided to stick with that style, if I was to change anything...it would be very minor since I want to keep that style with very few compromises or as you say, enhancements.
And if you don't like it, just say so. I won't have hard feelings about it. After all, I'm not forcing you to like it. I find the game's look to be very beautiful though, perhaps you should play it if you haven't yet? Though on another note, you obviously like the box enough, to keep on checking back it. hmmmm... ;)
To be completely fair to those that said that I could have been more original (E_G, MARKER, and TTT), I did in fact made 3 other backs/concepts for this box. One was with a close up lumbering colossus with the wanderer shining his sword at it, another was actually just a wall with all the info on it with faded pics of the wanderer and the lady on either sides. All of which had completely DIFFERENT taglines, screenshot borders, sypnosis etc etc...in other words - completely different from the original.
However, this is the one that (as Ninty said) captured the style and feel of the game the best, thus I decided to stick with it. I only feel sorry to those that couldn't appreciate this box's beauty just for the sake of more "originality." To those that did, however, I applaud you. :)
I promise the second part will be absolutely original from me just to address this issue of "originality." Though that alone doesn't make it the better box...but we'll see then, won't we? ;)
The fact is, Ladykiller could make a really average box and it would still get into the HoF.
This site has become more about the popularity of the artist than the actual box itself -.-
this is cool, but i agree with everyone else, not your best. Well, actually, the only thing that bothers me is the image of the Collosus you chose on the back, it just looks... weird, mainly because you're seeing it's side instead of the front of it, and having it seem to be looking down on the character would make it feel a lot more massive and epic.
Poor Collosi... theres no female collosi out there...
no wonder one of them (the last one) has hair on the palm of his hands... LMAO XDDDDD
#24, i sorta see where your comig from Cerium, but the more popular you are the better chance you have of going in because more people have you as their fav author, so then more people will see it, which means ther is more chance of a fav.
so eventually when you get loadsa fans, you will get more boxes into the HOF more often...
so i suppose you cant expext your boxes to get HOF very early (mabye a couple of exceptions) at least that how i see it anyways
Thanks Vengeance for the great constructive comment. I think it would be cool if I continued that feel from the front also, though I wanted to portray more landscape on the back. :)
And Cerium...not only is that an off topic comment, it's also baseless. For one thing, I don't consider this an "average" box from myself; the quality and design certainly isn't "average." If you had the popularity like DMS or MARKER or (if you consider me "popular") even me, would your opinion about popular artists getting HoF be different?
I reckon so.
Not only that, you completely ignore the fact that the current "popular artists" didn't go through that early phase. They obviously had to earn it. They didn't just magically get fans, you know. As E_G said, your argument is bias. And if you want to make a thread about it, you're very welcome to do so. Just not here, as I find your comments not only rude to me, but also rude to my fellow artists as well.
I agree as well. I respect everyone's opinions and all about originality and emptiness...but I politely disagree.
Quite frankly, I think its because this is one of those rare games. You really have to play it to fathom the "feel" and really understand it. I don't think seeing the box without really knowing the game and judging it without that knowledge really gives it much justice. I'm sure a lot of you that have faved the box have played the game and felt that LK was able to fully capture the feel, isn't that right?
#33, Well, thanks for the clarification. Good saying btw, Spike. :)
Though I was quite sure that you were implying that it was, considering the reception on the box. Also, when you said if you were to "make a box similar quality to this one" it's a safe assumption that you obviously meant it along those lines. Especially when you mentioned the word "average" in your previous comment...hmmm. Nonetheless, that doesn't validate your unnecessary comment which you haven't even excused yourself for - though I'm not expecting you to, for that matter.
gets back on soapbox* lol
I'm passionate about my designs, if you haven't noticed...I like to give people something new for each box I design. I take into account the presentation as much as the style, which I put much thought in to get that closest feeling to that of the game. In return, I only ask my fellow artists to respect my artistic decisions - as I do theirs.
And I agree with Fate breaker, this design seems to work with people who actually have played the game and know its feel. Those that can't seem to get past the fact that I've remodeled a few things from the original to keep that feel, are the ones that didn't like it and I respect those opinions. Just stay tuned for my next box then. ;)
That's because I actually am on my school's debate team. Though I plan to quit next year, the upcoming sophomores will make us head straight for disaster in the competitions...sigh. They don't have any idea what the word "empathy" means, which is crucial in any type of debate. You need to put yourself in the other's shoes first, before you can formulate your argument - armed with that insight and knowledge, you can quickly dismantle their side, piece by piece. ;)
Ofcourse, it can get heated some times, but we shake hands at the end of the day.
I'll pm both of you wips about my next box as I design it, kk? I have a feeling this is gonna be my most challenging project yet...(hint hint - there's barely any material! XD)
#39, More like my school's current freshman who'll be sophomores next year. Trust me, they have that "I'm always right and you're wrong" attitude which could get our team killed.
#38- I would debate but I have zero skills. ...Seriously, I've done a debate in English class and I literaly broke down. My arguement made no sense. XD
Oh, and about the wip, sounds good. I'll keep an eye out for PMs. ;)
P.S. My next box pretty much has the most material I've ever seen any game have. XD
You know, reading back on past comments on this page really does make me cringe and realise what an idiot I was. I never really apologised personally to you Al so i'll do it now. Im sorry :)
And also sorry to anyone i've offended with my comments on this page.
Sweet! I like it a lot! Not my favorite of yours, but great nonetheless.

@E_G, I did. I also had to make sure it was different and at the same time maintaining that simplistic beauty.

Like when you look at it, you can feel the game.
How you make it like that I do not know.
Brilliant box art, LK.
