Donkey Kong Country on SNES was probably one of the first video games I played, and to this day, still one of the best. So I wanted to make a box that paid homage to it but, unfortunately, was unable to find any solid resources. I decided to go for the next best thing and, as you can see, wound up making a box for Donkey Kong Country Returns instead. I custom made everything on this box with the exception of the cloud textures used in the background and the template which is Jevangod's. I got all of my reference images from various gaming sites with the exception of the logo which was rendered by Spiderpig24. As always, the WIP thread was invaluable, so I want to thank everyone who commented on it. As I said almost everything on this box was custom made in Illustrator using various techniques and although this box wasn't my longest project, about 3 days, it was certainly the most frustrating and the one I worked the hardest on. There are a lot of meticulous details on this box and full view/printable is a must. I'm very proud of this box, so I hope you all like it.
Nice job! I wouldn't call it all custom though. Looks like you used a LivePaint thing on the renders, cause that's pretty much what would cause that effect.
#2, Yes, I did use Live Trace but trust me when I tell you I spent a lot of time with the pen tool cleaning that up. If I hadn't done that, it would've truly looked terrible. The actual pen tool cleaning up was what took most of the 3 days. Thanks for the comments.
Just to clarify, I live traced the environments (wouldn't have produced better results to do it by hand), as well as the base to the logo, characters on the front and barrel on the back. The silhouettes on the back had to be mostly by hand because they weren't high res enough to live trace. Any really fine details were done with the pen tool as the live trace doesn't pick up on fine details. I went over everything and cleaned up anything that didn't look good with the pen tool.
I wasn't sure what to do with the background on the presentation, so I just did something similar to what was on the box and thought it looked good. This box is supposed to be essence like and simple. I went for a simplistic approach and I won't label it as an essence box, but I think it's simpler than my others. Therefore I didn't want to go crazy on the presentation but I also didn't want to just put a solid color. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you, I could not have done it without the help out the WIP thread. This game is going to be so great, and I'm especially looking forward to the sunset shore level which inspired this box. From the looks of the screenshots, it's easily one of the most aesthetically pleasing DKC levels ever.
#18, that's alright. I have so many friends who hate Nintendo with a burning passion, so you're certainly entitled to your opinion. Personally, I love Nintendo, so I had to make at least make one Nintendo box.
Update: Added a 3D temp. Everything else is the same. I'm not 100% sure if it uploaded correctly, but I think it did. If it's on a 3D template, then you're seeing the right version.
The front is very nice, very elaborate and colorful.
The back... it's less interesting and leaves alot to be desired.
The contrasting colors don't work either..
Fair enough. I knew that not everyone would like the colors, but I really wanted to roll with it. You are entitled to that opinion though. The back was much more difficult to make. It actually took me a while just to think of that.
Sorry for not commenting on this until now, I'm not sure how I missed it.
I like what you did with the DK renders on the front, helps them match up with the simplistic background. However, the difference in style of the back (specifically with the characters) and limited color kind of turn me off. It's a good effort though, and I'm really into the front.
Game looks excellent too, can't wait to try it out.

The colours are very pleasing to the eyes. I would go as far as to say 'sexy', and thats something that I NEVER say.

I'm really put off by anything Nintendo, this looks good, however in particular it doesn't appeal to me.

Credit to Star89er for the 3D temp.

Something's off about the proportions of the box. Like the front is too wide. Other than that, it's quite fantastic.

the back needs more work
