This is my entry for Reed's Indie game design contest.
I recently saw in the game store how they have cases out amongst the actual retail games for download exclusives such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This design for Braid is the same idea, but for a Japanese PS3 release of the game.
I'm not to wise about the current indie game scene, so after taking a look at some of the more popular titles, I came to the conclusion that Braid would be the one of the ones I could do the best with. Having never played the game before, I downloaded it and played it through before starting any work on the box design, and found the gameplay experience to be very artistically charging. I went to work on the drawings with aesthetic design appeal, as well as my own visual interpretations of the game in mind. I then filtered my original colored artwork to match the more painted, light and airy look of the game.
Thanks in advance as always for your comments and favs guys, and best of luck to everyone who put together an indie game box. There's been some very cool stuff so far, so please check them out via the tag if you haven't already. :)
#3, #4, that's what people said when MARKER entered the last one. But he didn't win. That's also a very defeatist attitude to have.
Anyway, it's not the entire point to be the winner. A big part of it is about expanding/exploring your abilities within the specified constraints. The last one was about working with limited colors. This one is about working with games that generally have very limited artwork (and exposure). Which makes it ironic that Drakxxx chose Braid, because that probably has the most high quality artwork available of all, but didn't use any of it.
Awsome as always! Design fits the game's mood very well. I can even hear Braid's music right now :P
I, guess, I will upload my box tomorrow, so there wasn't too much time between submisions :) By the way, can I use your Indie logo, just like it's official one?
The front composition is pitch perfect. Your drawing style really compliments this game.
This is my favourite entry so far, but I wouldn't call this a winner yet. Mad Spike is a game changer and there is always a chance we could get a surprisingly amazing entry from someone else. ;)
Drakxxx, don't take this the wrong way, but I would like to see someone else make a better box and win the competition, because I can't imagine it happening.
The drawings are amazing, but I don't like that the box is in Japanese and I hate the template.
These kind of competitions are unfair because anyone from higher (blue) rankings will win. I am not saying this box will win, but it will be one of the winners.
I'll be honest, these competitions make me angry to the point where I want to stop making box at all.
Anyways, I come back later to find this box in HoF and next day to find it in MasterWorks.
This is completely solid and looks like it could be official. I have noticed all your boxes are hand drawn. Have you ever considered making one that isn't?
Please forgive the wall o text, but I wanted to address some of the comments:
#3 and #4, The last thing I'd want to do with my work is discourage any other artists from participating in events. I love this community endlessly, and one of the best elements about this site is seeing the truly dedicated improve over time with there designs.
Both of you guys are talented at graphic design and I can easily tell you have a true passion for it. As Reed mentions later on in this thread, and as others have expressed in the past, design for the sake of designing, and keep at it.
#10 thanks you sir. I draw and color in Photoshop with a Waccom tablet. For this design I applied various Photoshop filters to the artwork to give it the painting / pastel look that it has.
#12 Many thanks man! I'd be more than happy to send you the little sticker I made up, absolutely. If anyone else would like it, feel free to let me know and I'll send it your way.
#16 I understand were your coming from, but as I mentioned to #3 and #4, my best advice would be to keep at it, and don't let anything stifle your creativity. Use the positive comments you receive as fuel to motivate your work further, and criticisms as ways to strengthen your overall work. In regards to the template, I plan on changing the color of the plastic, as it does seem to have a slight pink tone which throws things off a bit.
#22 Thanks a bunch man! Though custom art is definitely my favorite way of going about things, I have a few on my page that I've done with pre-existing materials:
#29 Thanks Slyder. I figured the artwork would lend itself better to a Japanese format, and the concept of specifically designing a retail display box for download only American developed game for another country was strangely interesting to me.
Regardless though, I'm now interested in seeing this design as a US box, so I'm working on a US version that I'll update with. I should have it up within the next day or so. :)
#32 Thanks man. The design does have a certain shirty esque flow to it, so I might just change the characters out and see how it looks.
#33 Thank you! I'm actually going to be updating this one with a US version, but I do see what you mean. I should have kept the PSN info up top for sure, since this is a download game.
Well, time's up. It's pretty obvious you won. Congratulations Drakxxx though i'm not at all suprised :D It'll be nice to see something different on the front page.
I updated with the US version of the design as a few of you guys mentioned you would like to see it, and I though it would be cool to do.
I changed the logo around for the US design as well.
o.O I some how missed this. I'm impressed everytime you upload a box. And i love the fact that popularity has nothing to do with your rank because you deserve every fav you get. One thing, your template goes a little weird when it hits the ground part of your presentation it looks a little cut-off.
#48 For sure man. I've been putting together material for a tutorial for awhile now, and I hope to get it up soon. I use the same technique with digital drawing for these box art designs as I do with the t-shirt stuff I do.

Magnificent work Drak, the color of the template doesn't really seem fitting though. But that's just me nitpicking. =)

#3, #4, That's pretty weak guys.
This box is magnificent.
I'm not guaranteeing this will win until I see all of the boxes, but you have a good shot.
By the way, Drak, do you color these drawings in Photoshop? How do you achieve that painterly style with the color? It looks great.

It's freaking amazing, but I think if you're trying to use the new PS3 box art then you should take a look at this:

And copy and paste that top in since that's how it's supposed to look. =]
It would end up something like this: link =]

I changed the logo around for the US design as well.
The Japanese design is still at version 1.
Thanks again!

One of the reasons i didn't enter this competition was that i knew that, even if i could push my boundaries far,far away, i couldn't reach this level.
