This one's been a long time in the works. I decided that I wanted to try painting something by hand. I had sketched the helmet from Killzone a few times and figured that would be a fairly easy thing to paint as a first attempt. I worked with a 24"x36" paper canvas and acrylic paints. The painting process took about 4 days. The lettering was the hardest part since I did the outlines in pencil with a ruler then had to try to stay inside the lines with the paint. You'll probably see where I failed a few times.
Once the painting was done, I photographed it and pulled it into photoshop. It's pretty much untouched by PShop aside from brightening it and correcting the red tones to match RunawaRed's colors on the back.
This project became a collab once I decided that there was NO WAY I was going to paint a back, so I asked RunawayRed to take care of the back for me. I really like his part of the design and I hope you enjoy the whole thing! :)
Did you do the sketch next to the painting, too? I think that had better detail. Still pretty good acrylics. I didn't think you did the logo by hand. I thought that it was done in Photoshop with some modifications. Pretty nice work.
#12, Yeah the ink sketch was my prototype for the bigger picture. I wanted to do more detail, but I'm honestly not that good with the paint yet. This was actually my first time working with acrylic so it was a total experiment. And, yeah, the logo was a PAIN! lol
For a first time with acrylics, pretty good. I admit it's tough to get good detail with that media unless you have a ton of brushes in different shapes and sizes.
Dude acryllic kicked my ass the first time I used it. The main thing is to not glob it on there cause it'll become like plastic when it dries. You did a great job on the shading for it being one of your first attempts, but you'll want to use a bit more variety in your colors so as to make it have more depth. So basically what I'm saying is, to put it in Photoshop terms, make a gradient, when you want to shade something. And so you know, the lighting you created is superb.
I just made a 22 by 34 canvas painting of Belle from Beauty and the Beast with acryllic, and I have to say that after doing that particular one I'd have to give mad props to anyone who paints something commercially recognizable, such as what you did here, because when you do that it has the potential to go horribly wrong, and people take you down for it.
So great job :) I hope to see more of your custom work in the future.

Excellent artwork Josh, and the back design compliments it wonderfully. I've been missing your work, but this more than makes up for it.
