Alright. Back when I first started making boxes, I didn't have Photoshop. So I used Microsoft Paint and Power Point. You can use PNG images in Power Point and position them over or under eachother, and save the overall picture. It sounds complicated or fake, but you can do a few more things using Power Point AND Paint as opposed to just using Paint.
So another thing I recommend you do is make and account on Planetrenders.net & save the renders you find on there as PNGs to your desktop/My Documents/etc.
I recommend you get Photoshop though, it is totally worth it, trust me.
