Thread: I have this Idea...

    Lightbulb I have this Idea...

Hello All, im a 2 year vet here on VGBA, i havnt logged on in a 8-10months, and im really impressed with the sites improvement! I was busy with college, where i am currently and I.T. major, orginainally i was going to be a design major, but i ended up switching last minute for various reasons. So, I am skilled in photoshop / illustrator (my boxes dont really show it, they were long ago) and i can program.
To get to the "Idea": Me and some friends have this....idea.....to create a game. Now, unlike a lot of youngsters who get into this thinking they are going to be successful and do this for the rest of their life, we, are realistic. We have a small game idea: a 2-D fighting game. Long story short, we have a game engine. We have some sprite sheets, and its coming along nicely.
To get to the point of why i am posting in general, is because i have a request. i want to see some boxart/ normal art, fan art, etc for this game. Now, the game does not have much to it right now, and honestly im bored and being somewhat of an attention whore. Besides that point, i will provide my website / images of my current art, and ideas. I have some fan art from other various fantasys / fan-fic, etc on the site as kind of a reference of the characters.
The game is a fantasy game, a fantasy fighting game. Meaning, necromancers, druids, rangers, stuff like that. I have a bit of a lore set up, which will be posted to the site shortly. The genre of the game, is suppose to be a very "different" type of fighting game. Its dark, not up-beat and colorful, but still has the fighiting game feel, example: castlevania meets blazblue. So seeing some original ideas for this type of genre would also be awesome.
I cant promise any reward or credit for your work, but im curious to spread out online and find people's ideas, and get their inspiration. Thanks!

So, you want the community to do art for your game and mention that it will most likely not get credited? That's usually not how these kinds of things work.

What Josh said up there. Your website doesn't work and all you're doing is giving us ideas. We're artists(broadest definition of artist here), that means when anyone jumps into something like this, they need more than some words on paper. If you can show us actual working versions of this game, then we'll talk.

*Sigh* i said i cant promise, didnt say i wouldnt credit you. Im not perfect, and this would be a very indirect source. And Specifically i would put your art int the "fan art" section of my site, with your user name, etc. which does not exist yet, and wouldn't be used for advertising or actual concept art, its more to build this fanbase and get people ideas. So let me rephrase: YOU WILL be credited, username, deviant page, email, whatever you fuckin' feel like. xD

Ah, weird. I will fix that.

My question is, if you really see it as a lost cause, why are you replying? If you are interested, that would be a much more positive response for me to consider.

So I take time and effort to orchestrate fake fan art for no money and there is a chance you won't even credit me?

Yeah, buddy, considering the amoral marketing tactic you propose along with the fact that your site doesn't exist yet isn't looking good on your credibility.

There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, so that when we needed them, they could draw the art that we never could. And then we may or may not give them credit.

Now I'm not entirely sure what you are looking for. At first I was thinking you want pixel art for the game itself, but now it seems you are commissioning people to create fan art. If so, that seems a little strange. Usually a game/company/event has to gain popularity and fans before fan art/fan websites/etc happens. That, and it would be rather difficult to create fan art for a game that we have no images or video of.

You are not a very good negotiator.

Your game is not even complete and you want fanart for it already? That's not usually how it goes. If you want "fan"art for the game, it has to be popular enough to gain fans that are willing to work on it, thus calling it fanart.

Also, what do you mean by "they will be credited for the work, yet you can't promise that?" That sort of thing tells me that you are prone to lying to your client. Do you think that I would want to work with someone that "can't promise me credit" after I put all of my thought and energy into the project? That sort of thing pisses a lot of people off, especially when you're going after their ideas, which I would think might be the case on why you need the artwork.

A more proper way of negotiating would be "You will be credited for your work, but it's unpayed." I can deal with that, that's straight to the point, and there are people who would totally do it.

If he shows that he doesn't understand how things work from the start, it's already over. He isn't professional or reliable, so no matter what he posts now, don't go for it.

Calm down guys. Some of us are bored and just want something to do. All he is doing is giving us some ideas to put our artistic talents to use. Nothing wrong with that. No need to rag on him.
