    Arrow Unreal Engine 4 Revealed

Unreal Engine 4 Trailer Showcases Next-Gen Graphics

That looks amazing. It kind of freaks me out to think that this is early next-gen. It's hard to imagine what games will look like in 7-10 years.

I was blown away by it, the detail alone is just incredible. There is an even longer, detailed video:

Hope you guys like it, cause 3/4 of next gen games will probably use it if this gen has told us anything.

And what's your point? It's just an engine for a game. The reason being that the UE is widely used is because it became some sort of an industry standard since making the switch from UE2 to UE3 was pretty easy for most developers. If I made a game that was completely out of the demographic of a realistic shooter, and didn't tell you it was developed with the Unreal Engine, would you care?

UE4 might be a very powerful engine, but what really matters is how the developers utilize it. Do they want to make more TPS or FPS games? Fuck, that's original! Nobody could have ever thought about that! The industry craves for innovation, and yet the consumer is too damn afraid of that change. Developers will continue to churn out the most basic gameplay designs for profit, because that's what most people are comfortable with.

If this gen has told me anything, it is that some engines are capable of more than what the common folk assume they're capable of. The Unreal Engine can do much more than empty its bowels out with TPS and FPS games. Much of the younger game designers today are trying to break out of the mold that the "realistic shooters" have created.

Also Unity3D seems to have gained some ground in the gaming industry, so your estimate might be an overestimate.

I think the advancement in particle effects and lighting alone will open up a lot more windows for some interesting and unique ideas.

My point is I get tired of every game looking the same, it's a great engine but still the majority of games don't need to use it.

Looks good. Let's just hope developers put it to more visually creative use than what's seen in most UE3-supported games.

It pretty much has the bells and whistles of the majority of engines in the industry, except beefed up. Some artists will benefit the new features of the engine.

And pretty much the reason why most of the games look the same is because the art direction in most cases was pretty generic during this generation. Really has hardly anything to do with the engine the games run on.

It is interesting to note this is a real-time rendering that is displaying them particle effects so well. This shows major strides not just in hardware, but in the way the software can implement the effects.

Yes, you are correct that current gen games looking similar has nothing to do with the engines, but specifically with art direction.

I'm at a point where I can no longer be impressed by graphics, if every game that came out within the next 20 years looked like a PlayStation 3 game, I would be satisfied.

I have reached a satisfactory plateau with visuals, not saying that this doesn't look good though, because it does.

Impressive! but I sure hope they don't forget to include the most important aspect of a game:

DECENT GAMEPLAY! aka NEXT-GEN GAMEPLAY (sorry, for the CAPS)

But seriously, that looks incredible. I wish the video was 1080p, though.
