Default A quick PC query :)

This message just popped up on my PC, AVG seemed to have successfully removed it, but I'm curious as to how harmful/ worried I should be. How dangerous is adware? Where does it come from etc? Thanks.

I did a PC scan after and 0 threats were found so I assume it's gone.

Well, that's that. Might as well throw it out now and get a new one.

Yeah, you need to burn your computer now before it threatens anyone else's lives

In all seriousness, I doubt you have anything to worry about if AVG was able to remove the threat.

As for where it may have come from, have you downloaded anything recently that you feel may have been a source?

Thanks for a 'serious' reply, but yes, I did download an Apple update earlier on, but that's about it. I'm not sure if that could have caused it though.

I doubt that's the cause. I'm assuming you just downloaded it from Apple's site or wherever the official source is for that kind of stuff?

    Straight through apple, nowhere else.
BTW I just did a quick google search and learned that these 'adware' threats sometimes attach themselves to regular downloads you do for stuff you normally use, so I assume that could be where it came from?

Maybe. Considering AVG was able to remove the threat, there's little else to do other than continue exercising caution in where you visit and download from.

At least you have anti-virus software installed. I've known people who apparently don't feel the need for such things.

Your first problem is having AVG, as it's a pretty terrible program. But anyway, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Look at the location of where the file was found, it may give some clues as to what caused it.

AVG is a godawful virus scanner. I doubt that particular infected file it has found is not the only one lurking on your compy.

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware are particularly useful for tracking down hard to find computer viruses.

Though, if it's a rootkit, that's a whole 'nother thing to be very worried about, but I doubt you would have one.

The free to use Microsoft Security Essentials is really all you need. That, and maybe Malwarebytes occasionally.
