Well, I know there are a lot of topics and words that are inappropriate, but that's BECAUSE of the 13+ audience. Plus, this rule exists because of a law. I'm sure the law doesn't have anything to do with each individual website and the type of conversations held there. To rephrase my question, what was the original reason that this website out of all websites was deemed too mature? Or are children not allowed to make an account on ANY website on the internet? If that's the case, my mind will be blown.
stevencho is correct. In order for any website to collect personal information on an individual, that person must consent. Any person under the age of 13 needs to have express written consent from their parents. The website operator is required by US Federal law to maintain copies of these records. In most cases, it is easier for operators/owners to simply not allow users under 13 years of age to join their forums or website if it requires submission of any personal information, such as a login.
That one's a knee slapper.
Isn't that the reason why on children's TV shows and that one McDonalds MMO always say, "ask your parents before logging on!"?
Doesn't that also make every annoying 12 year-old YouTube user and CoD player illegal?
Ever heard of COPPA guys? Derp.

Uhh, I was shown this, and I just wanted to stop by to clear any misconceptions. In real life, I have self harmed several times over abuse for being homosexual. Words such as "fag", "queer" etc. are hurled at me on a daily basis, and it severely hurts my self esteem.
On here, however, it has never been a problem. This is because the abuse is nonexistent. Any usage of potentially offensive and derogatory terms associated with being gay are always made in good fun here. There should certainly be rules in place to discipline out of hand insults that get genuinely serious, but when it's people just messing around, I don't really see the problem. Live and let laugh, you know? There is a tendency to take things too seriously sometimes.
Anyway, I just wanted to make sure that nobody thinks I do treat the aforementioned terms lightly in real life. Here, everyone is very open and tolerant (perhaps barring Koopa, but then I don't know if he's changed his mind since). All I wanted to say.
Thanks for clearing that up. I agree, and that the intent behind the use of the word and person in question using it should put under analysis rather than simply the word itself. I can understand their usage in a friendly environment, and don't really see much use in looking down on it with any disdain.
It is also important to consider how things look to new people or outsiders. Everyone might not know when two members are just joking and throwing around insults in the name of fun or if there is actual insulting and attacking going on. One of the purposes of a moderator is to prevent hostility or the image of hostility on the site. And with that I have to stay on the side of caution even if it means we appear to be taking things too seriously at times. And like I've said before, if members want to freely banter back and forth unmoderated about random off topic matters, we had a quite active Skype group currently going on and I would recommend you take advantage of that.
