Yes but the "surprise" card can go so far. The intention was to revive the site, and trust me, I have chatlogs with koopa saying that he disagreed with the invites. Plus, I refuse to find anything other than elitism in your comment, there is no standard for "good" boxart. Hell, it barely qualifies as art. Kickstart basically started out as an ego stroke from Xcore with an improbable idea. And guess what, half of those 'veterans' were members we have now and recently including you. Oh and lest we forget, anyone and everyone was given full freedom to add to a tag. So all in all, no, you do not know what or why it was invite. The only reason it was because a) surprise b) tanz would throw a hissy fit and try to ruin it.
I don't wish to expand this argument but I just have to say, you have no idea what or why we did this in the first place, to kickstart the site.
@Stevencho -- "we" Are you kidding me? Did you guys turn this into a secret club or something? This is why I hate anything that even resembles exclusivity on this place, everyone suddenly acts like that they own the event/group and it must be reliant on their own decisions. This is not BeYourTrueDesigns. Just because you got invited doesn't give you some higher insight.

This man speaks the truth. The original Kickstart was XCore's idea, as stated, but we disagreed on how it should be done. He wanted to invite only the very oldest members, those who aren't even active on the site anymore, like ElCrazy, Ervo, Gunslinger, MARKER, Lodovicok, E_G, etc. His goal was to use the event to, in his words "Have the veterans show VGBA how it's done".
I wanted to invite more recent members who are just as good or better than the older veterans... users like YoshiStar, del337er, Mariolee, Stevencho, sd1833, ManuelAlejandro, etc. I saw it not so much as "Showing people how it's done", because all of the members I just listed can run circles around me in Photoshop. I didn't feel like any of us are good enough to show any other member "how it's done". I wanted it to work as more of a great start to the new year. The site had been suffering badly from lack of interest, and it seemed like a great way to build momentum going into the New Year.
The difference in opinion turned into an argument, and XCore left the idea essentially under my control. I retained the invite-only status, not because I wanted it to be elitist, but because I wanted it to be a surprise. I wanted it to have a "What's going to happen NEXT?!" quality, and that would have been lost had it been open to everyone. Unfortunately, very, very few of the members actually followed through with their boxes, and it wasn't so much an event to remember as it was one to hopefully forget. We did agree, though, after the largely negative reaction to the idea, that it should have been open. Though the original intent was to do another one in the Fall, rather than wait an entire year.
@Mub, As ironic as it may sound coming from me of all people, I would love to see a new BeYourTRUEDesigns event on this site. The idea itself was remarkably well-executed. The original Kickstart was meant to embody that same spirit that BYTD had at the start... the spirit of community creation and flooding the site for one day with a massive amount of incredible work.

I'm in!![]()
Calm down man, no harm mean't at all. I do have a pretty good idea of what this was, because I was one of the few who brainstormed this in MSN, along with Koops, Mariolee, and a few others. But no worries, regardless of the past, I'm excited for this event. I have a nice box planned! Plus, it's New Years, get off your computer and go have some fun! :]
It's be a very good insult If I didn't already :P Eve's the optimal time for bad decisions and everything going wrong, haha.
And I was just ranting, and yes, I was one of the few who actually brainstormed the idea. Mostly I handled the timing and the invites.
And I have no disagreements with that. I just don't like the idea of people saying that this will not be "better" just because it's not exclusive.
I'm in. And this time I actually mean it.
I'd like to join. Could use a project.![]()

So... Being that I haven't actually finished a cover design since around 11 months ago, I guess I'll join in to motivate me into designing one more time, but I've kinda developed a belief of some sort to not use renders, or use renders to an extent to create something new out of them, because at times, I'm only designing something similar to what another has done, and I really don't like that.
However, an idea came to me that I think I will stick with, so hopefully I'll see to its completion before the next semester starts anew.
I've just about finished a box for this. When does it start anyway?
