Default 1st Annual VGBA Cup - Round 4

Wait, spypilot actually contributed something worthwhile to the site?

Description: Make a box for your favourite Everyone rated game (EXCLUDING GAMES FROM THIS GENERATION) and turn it into a Mature rated game. How you choose so is up to you.
Platforms: Any console for any generation, excluding this generation (7th generation)
    --->Due Date: Tuesday, August 16th, 2011 AT 11:59pm EST <---
    TAG: vgba11r4

Boxes will be judged by our secret panel. Leaderboard will be posted on Thursday, August 18th, 2011.

Good luck guys, and happy designing!

    -Flexx

FINAL NOTE: Submit the boxes directly to me via PM; you may post your boxes starting August 17th, 2011.

    Judging Criteria
Aesthetics: Does your box look genuinely pleasing to the eye, or is it just a jumbled mess of filters and images? (out of 10)
Attention to Theme (Badass Factor): Is your box just some lame Mario artwork with a M logo slapped on there, or has extra effort been put in to ensure that your cuddly game looks as mature as possible? (out of 5)
Creativity: Does your box use the same old tired layouts and filters, or does it have a bold and unique design? (out of 5)
Presentation: Does your presentation compliment, or detract from your overall design? (out of 5)

Kind of sick of the generation limitations, but a cool theme nonetheless.

Quick question, can we do E10+ rated games as well?

Okay, I'll try to take this round a bit more seriously. Game face on.

Limitations make things harder, don't tell me you always put your games on easy mode.

This Round I'm looking forward to showing my stuff

These are mainly put in place because I feel there are wayyyy too many current-gen boxes being submitted these days, plus it adds a challenge for you guys; I never said this would be easy. I must say, though, this competition has produced some of the finest boxarts I've seen in a while. Have a little faith!

So we have to actually pick an E rated game, no made up games I'm guessing?

This round should be interesting. But I'm not really sure what game I will do.

So, why all the generation restrictions?

I also dislike the generation limits. For example, a few rounds ago I came up with a perfect idea for a PS1 game, but it was only the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation of games that was allowed.

There's a difference between a challenge (Pink theme, turn a E rated game into an M rated game, etc.) and an unpleasant and unnecessary restriction that adds no extra merit to the competition (Generation limits.)

For example, it might have been really fun to see a modern game redesigned to look like it came out on the Atari or NES back during the Retro round. I don't think it has to be changed. So far I've done fine with the restrictions in place, I just don't agree with their purpose or principal.

In before Pokemon is equated to dog fighting.

Oh christ...if you can't seem to get it the first time, I'm not going to bother explaining it again. I don't WANT to give you guys an easy ride...if I did, I might as well just take a $100 bill and burn it. The whole PURPOSE of this competition is to challenge you; without making the round criteria ridiculously hard, this was the only other way to add an extra layer of challenge. Plus I feel it's neat that this competition is forcing you all out of your comfort zone and making you create boxes that you otherwise wouldn't have...if I made everything overly-simple then everyone would be at 1st place right now.

Kingdom Hearts (1) is Rated E. Just in case someone wants it, since I don't.

In case you didn't get it the first time, I will explain it again.

There's a difference between a challenge and an arbitrary restriction that hinders creativity, yields nothing of worth, and makes the process less enjoyable for the participants.

You might as well have said "By the way, you're not allowed to use the CTRL key while making your box. You know, to make it challening."

I really don't care either way, I just want to make sure you understand why some people have a problem with it.

Show me one single example of somebody that "thought outside of the box" because they were forced to design a cover for generation A instead of generation B, and not because they were a creative individual working with a theme. I'll happily concede if you can do that. The themes of each round is what's encouraging people to think outside the box, not being forced into a certain console or generation of games for their submission. Creative and unconventional boxes could be made for a 360 game just as easily as an Atari 2600.

I have this habit of over explaining myself sometimes because I tend to assume I'm either not getting my point across, or the person I'm talking to isn't listening or is too dense to understand. I often consciously try to hold back when making statements because I don't want to unintentionally imply that I think anyone is stupid.

This, however, is exactly why I tend to over explain things; people like you seem to just ignore the things I say:

So to reiterate, I don't care about the restriction. I've done just fine with it in place. I'm not fighting to get it taken out, I just like to talk about how I feel about things to people. Also, I think I've done exceptionally well throughout this contest. Nearly every entry I've submitted has exceeded my expectations I have for myself. I'm not sure what "poor performance" you're referring to. I don't think I've ever even made it past the first round in a contest before dropping out until now.

That's extremely conceited of you. The submissions for this contest have been spectacular because some of the best artists on the site are participating, not because you said they have to design something for the PS2 instead of the PS1, or the NES instead of the Wii. In fact, the creativity established in this contest has nothing to do with your generational restrictions. I don't throw around words like arbitrary without meaning it.

Sorry, Dad. Does this mean I should go to my room without dinner tonight? I think you're taking this a little too personally. I'm just discussing my feelings, man.

I get the frustration in previous rounds. I also get that Flexx does the generation limits to make us have to THINK.

What I don't get is the continued gripe about the generation limit in THIS round. Flexx all but eliminated the limit this round.

EDIT: Okay, I'm turning around and leaving the room, so to speak. I thought I walked in on a debate, but this is looking rather...personal. Excuse me.

It's not griping. One person mentioned it, and other people chimed in with their own opinions on the matter. We're not protesting or anything.
