The brush tool w/ a tablet. Digital drawing in photoshop requires the same motor skills used in traditional art, so I think it's best for you to acquire the skills in traditional art first before going digital.

A Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch is the way to go if you want a budget priced tablet, otherwise go for their Intuos4 tablets, if you want a professional's tablet.

Drawing with a mouse makes as much sense as drawing with your foot. Results can be quite derpy, but it's not impossible.

Drawing freehand with a mouse is impossible, but using the pen tool is highly effective. Results don't look hand drawn by any means, but you can get pretty official looking art with the pen tool and proper coloring.

I do all of my digital art by hand first, in pencil, then I scan it onto my computer and use the Pen tool to "ink" the lines, and then color it in Photoshop. But that's because I can't afford a tablet.

I have a tablet, but I still often use the pen tool. I find it difficult to draw good lines as I have a sketchy style, but I love coloring with a tablet.

I've had an incredibly difficult time becoming comfortable with my tablet. Granted, I don't use it as often as I should. My hands are shaky and I can never get lines to go the direction I need them to in one smooth motion.

To start you off first get the Bamboo Wacom tablet. A used one shouldn't cost you much at all. Like 50 bucks or so. Then when you are ready to draw start with something real, if you try to do drawings from the head it will be hard to learn on. One of my first drawings I did was a self portrait. I followed a little of what my Photoshop teacher told me, which in college is usually just a brief and quick tutorial to get you started. Pretty much what he said was get a high quality image. I'm talking a image where you can see each individual eye lash and see the separation of color and pupil in a eye. This will allow you to draw with a better end result. Take the drawing and do a quick outline of it in a separate layer. Like eye, nose, lip, outline and hair line then when you have that you can color grab off your skin to get a color range of skin tones or use someones flesh ball or whatever they are called. Keep the photo open on one side of the screen and start drawing on the other. I usually start with a mid tone of my face, my general color and fill in my whole head with that, then fill in the basic hair color, put white in the eyes, pink in the lips and ect. Try and make it look like a cut out of each part of your face. Then wish a larger brush with lower opacity that is faded you can start shading the darks and lights into the skin. I usually start soft and getting hard. Makes it easy to adjust if you need too. Once I have got the basic lighting in I work more detailed. I go into the hair and start making strands with a cluster brush (I will provide a link with them) and I do lights mids and darks to make the hair look real. I go in with a small brush and brush out some eye lashes and do the same with eyebrows. I shape the nose and give the nostrils dark shapes and the tip of my nose a glow with lighting. The lips can have lines in them to show the natural cracks in lips. After I have got most of it done, I do a separate layer for pours. Which I can't really talk much about because it's something you learn from doing and if you want a real image kinda look do a grain on the whole image which I will provide in the link which also gives the end result a good look.

If you have any questions just let me know.

    My end result.
