The Wii didn't fail at all, it was Nintendo's most successful system. Maybe not for their longtime fans, but it did great. With a lot of the casual gaming market going to $2-$5 phone apps, they aren't going to pay $50 for games for much longer. I see it as this; they need to either get a lot of core games on the system to keep up with the competition, or they will have trouble getting a fan base. People need a reason to buy the system to play AC on it, when they could play the same game on the 360 or PS3. I'm currently not seeing any reasons to do so.

To me I think it starting failing when Wii games seemed to easily ported off to the iPhone 4. Or of course the software droughts that's been going on. I hope, even though 9/10 they won't they redo the Wii U. To this day, there's to much to the console that Nintendo's unorganized with the information, They're not giving out specs (which the 3DS's showed up on the Nintendo site a few days after it was revealed. There's like 5 different stories about the online. They're making a completely new controller that only one of the five players can use. Right now I would actually just appropriate a Wii HD, that supports Wiimotes and GCN controllers, maybe even a bluetooth headset/Classic controller.

That all sounds nice execpt for the disc compatibility , still horrible media support, oh well I guess Netfilx will do. (I know it a rumor but the Netflix part is more than guaranteed), but I'm hating the lowered back compatibility, like the media stuff it's probably to cut costs. As long as GCN games are digital, (and there's an popular movie service [which I highly doubt]), I'll be ok.

    But at $299 I really can't complain.

Still is showing up as $600 in Australia. Not sure how recent they updated it, or where they got their info from. https://www.ebgames.com.au/wiiu-153813-Wii-U-Wii-U

EBGames/Gamestop is known to make up a placeholder pric with no source, I doubt they'd go so crazy as $600, I couldn't see them passing $400/$500, Nintendo always been about casual gaming, so I doubt that price.

Also I would pay an extra $50-100 for DVD/Blu-ray/GCN playback.

It's not like it is that crazy. In Australia, when the PS3 first came it out it was $800 - $1000.

Aussie prices must be heavily inflated then, That converted to US Dollars is around $842.88-1053.60 when the launch prices in the US for the PS3 was $500-$600. I'm not sure how to conversions are done but still I wouldn't trust an EB/Gamestop proposed price just yet.

I don't think playing DVD's and blu-rays should be an expected feature at all, especially considering the fact that it makes the device a lot cheaper. If someone buying a Wii U doesn't already have a DVD or blu-ray player in their household then something is definitely wrong.

I would highly bet that there's no way Nintendo will go that high. Supposedly the source that claimed $299 is very reliable (Like I said, they are the same people that first leaked the system specs), but maybe Australia prices will be a little different as everything is usually a lot more expensive. $299 would put it right at the price of the PS3 and (Upper tier) 360, so it would force both MS and Sony to rethink current console price as well as next gen console prices.

Nintendo has not always been about casual gaming, at all really. The only exception to this would be the Wii's lack of third party support and the excessive amount of mini-games. The N64, NES, SNES, and GameCube systems were by no means casual systems, and I fully expect Nintendo to return to those roots with this console release. It's already got the third party support everyone has been asking for.

    This.

Dead Nintendo... let it play DVD's/Blu Rays and be back compatible to N64, with a GameBoy Advance slot able to take Original GB games. Then you will have created the greatest console ever

Curse you Nintendo. I wasn't going to buy Wii U until a year or two after it's launch, but now I'm getting excited.

More exciting news: Epic Games is rumored to be showing Unreal Engine 4 running on the Wii U at GDC

It's in French so here is the translated portion:

Nintendo has already released details of the U Wii, but some developers are expected to show a little more in the coming days, while the studio Epic Games provides a demonstration of its next generation of game technology Unreal Engine 4 designed for this newcomer.

I was about to post these exact statements.

The Wii U? Running Unreal 4? This could be interesting.

Yeah, and CryENGINE 3 has been confirmed to run. I could not care less if it doesn't play DVD's or Blu-rays, as long as it's a capable gaming device. It's clear that Nintendo is really focused on making this the best console they can, there's no way I'll be skipping their conference this E3.

Very nice. As for the system's capabilities in general, we've heard estimates from developers, but nothing specific. I want to see what "twice as powerful as an Xbox 360" or whatever the latest rumor is, really entails.

And while all of this is fantastic news, of course, but there's really only one thing I absolutely must know at E3 this year: Retro Studios' secret project.

Retro Studios is supposedly working on not one, but two Wii U games. If that doesn't get anyone excited, then the OP of this thread should:

The amount of exceptional new hires they have had in the past year is very interesting. Even one of the lead designers behind Vigil Games (Worked on Darksiders).

I couldn't care less about the graphical capabilities the Wii U is able to provide. It's all fine and dandy that the Wii U has the capabilities to run next generation and current generation engines, but my key interest are the games it will provide, and how the engines expand the capabilities and boundaries of how the game is played. Will they raise the bar of what hasn't been introduced, or will they simply be scenery porn tagged along with the stale gameplay that we've come to expect for the past years or so?

And really, who the fuck cares about the inability to play DVDs/Blu-Ray on a gaming console? It's a tad inconvenient yes, but 9/10 people already own a DVD player, and a few already have a Blu-Ray player. Jegus, people love to complain about the simplest inconveniences.

An HD Metroid sounds tasty though. Metroid Prime thrives on atmosphere as part of its gameplay and a key input for its immersion. The touchscreen sounds like a very nice touch for the map system as well as the powerups you acquire.

Ah, yes, I remember hearing that they were expanding their operation with artists from varying sources. Retro remains my all-time favorite developer, and I feel at this point they can do no wrong.

I''ve no doubt this is a key thought amongst everyone here. On the graphical front, I'm just glad to see that Nintendo is willing to support technology that has previously eluded them.

I'm more concerned about the online systems it's going to provide, as well as its downloadable content. Since I'm a game developer that is capable of developing games that can run on iOS and Android devices, as well as PC, I'm more interested in Nintendo's online capabilities for indie game developers or developers running on a small budget. The WiiWare's distribution system was a total joke.
