    What Is Mortal Kombat: Legacy?
Mortal Kombat: Legacy is an American web series that debuted on Machinima.com's YouTube channel on April 11, 2011. The show is an adaptation of the fictional universe of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise. The show's premise originated with director Kevin Tancharoen's short film entitled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, portraying the original game's story in a realistic way, a concept he eventually submitted to Warner Bros. seeking the green-light for production on a re-imagined Mortal Kombat film. Warner Bros. refused to back the film, despite the attention and positive fan reception, but Tancharoen did receive the go-ahead to shoot the web series.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy takes place before the events of the first tournament and tells the background stories of several characters from the franchise, culminating in their reasons for participating in the upcoming tenth Mortal Kombat tournament, on which the first game was based.

    Production
On June 8, 2010, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth surfaced on YouTube amid confusion about its origins and intentions. Written, directed and edited by Kevin Tancharoen with friends and colleagues donating time, the short film was made without studio involvement on a $7,500 budget, filmed over a weekend, and completed in two months to show Warner Bros. Tancharoen's vision of a re-imagined Mortal Kombat film. Before submitting it to Warner Bros., he intended to privately upload the short to YouTube to gauge the response of a colleague, but he accidentally made it available to the general public, who quickly voiced an overwhelmingly positive response.

With the favorable fan reception, Tancharoen met with Warner Bros. executives, who stopped short of green-lighting a motion picture, but agreed to fund a web series based on the Mortal Kombat franchise. The final step was convincing Ed Boon, co-creator of the franchise and current executive producer at NetherRealm Studios, who just produced the latest video game installment, to agree to the series. Boon was impressed with Mortal Kombat: Rebirth but not entirely sold on Tancharoen's re-imagined vision. After he met with Tancharoen, Boon was surprised by his enthusiasm for the franchise and quickly came on board.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy is produced by Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Warner Premiere. Kevin Tancharoen, Lance Sloane and Tim Carter serve as producers. It consists of ten 9-12 minute episodes, each written by Tancharoen and Spartacus: Blood and Sand writers Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing, with Tancharoen directing. Larnell Stovall, who worked with Tancharoen on Rebirth, is the stunt coordinator. The series was filmed in Vancouver in February and March, with Tancharoen tweeting daily updates of their progress. Post-production began in March and continues alongside release. Visual effects are being handled by Goldtooth Creative Agency.

The low budget is very frustrating. The over-use of animation in episode 5 was a bit annoying, the acting in the Johnny Cage episode is awful, and Baraka looks like an Orc from Lord of the Rings. I think it's a decent series, but I'm waiting for Scorpion.

Agreed but it's better than the official Mortal Kombat movies.

no, nothing beats the most epic scene in cinematic history

Liu Kang: "Can Sonya beat Shang Tsung?"
Raiden: *Straight face, no emotion and cuts off Liu kang* "No"

Agreed. Still looking forward to the Scorpion/Sub-Zero one. I'd imagine it goes something like this:
    Episode 7 - Scorpion and Sub-Zero: Part 1
    Episode 8 - Scorpion and Sub-Zero: Part 2
Episode 9 - Sektor and Cyrax
    Episode 10 - Everyone?

Wow, there have been four new episodes since I last watched. How exciting!

Edit: I love that in Johnny Cage's introduction episode they're talking about him on Electric Playground.

For a second I thought Cage was being played by Tommy Tallarico.

Edit again: Oh shit, it's Ed Boon.

    I'm loving these camios!

The costumes in the new one are pretty cheap, but I'm glad that Scorpion and Sub-Zero actually resemble the characters.

I like the Legacy series so far and better then Conquest from 1997 or 1998. I'm looking forward to the next episode since I think we are going to see Quan Chi kill Scorpion's family and send him to come back to kill Sub-Zero.

The only thing cheap are the mask. Sub-zero's jacket he wears is pretty expensive.

Sub-Zero's mask was a little awkward. A bit too large, and moved strangly when he spoke. Scorpion's mask was pretty badass, despite it not being yellow.

Keep in mind in this continuity, Quan Chi might not be the one to kill the Shirai Ryu and Scorpion's family. They're probably trying not to introduce too many loose ends since they're working with a limited number of episodes. Introducing a character just to kill off the clan and frame Sub-Zero seems unnecessary at this point. It would be smart for them to not show it happening and lead the audience to believe it was Sub-Zero, that way if they make more episodes they can introduce Quan Chi later and reveal to those new to the mythos what happened.

I loved what they did with Raiden (Also, every time I see Raiden I think it's Charlie Day (Charlie, from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.) I love the idea of a god making himself into a mortal in order to save humanity, only for humanity to lock him up as a mental patient and sedate him. It felt a lot like the episode was for nothing though, since he escaped. It might as well have not happened, except for the enjoyment of the "what if" scenario.

Now that they're dealing with the more interesting characters (Raiden, Sub-Zero, Scorpion) instead of the really boring ones (Sonya and Jax) I'm much more excited about the series.

I loved that Johnny Cage is essentially Stephen Segal, right down to the reality TV show. (Except Segal isn't really that good at what he does.)

Hmm, apparently Tancharoen's aiming for a Blu-Ray/DVD release. I won't pay more than $10 for it.
Also, Season 2's been approved, apparently.

I think it's a little early to really say what I'd pay for a DVD of the entire series. They're still working on introducing characters.

I would like to believe that all of the introductions are taking place before the beginning of the first Mortal Kombat, hence the way the costumes look, and only Raiden has even mentioned the Mortal Kombat Tournament, while the others seem to be occupied with their normal lives. Just because some characters were only introduced in Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, doesn't mean that they didn't exist before those tournaments took place.
