Default Super Mario Galaxy Star Trail

I've been thinking of redoing my Hardcore Super Mario Galaxy box, and wanted to replace the ice thing on the bottom of Mario's foot on the front with something that looks more like what's behind Mario and Yoshi above. How does one go about this? Any specific brush tricks, I've tried a lot of them, but it's hard to get something as comprehensive as that.

Well in gimp there is a yellow sparkly brush that comes with it. I guess you could just colour that blue?

When I did it on my Galaxy 2 box I made the stars by hand in different shapes, placed them the way I wanted them, then drew the trail and did some blurring effects. I thought it came out pretty well.

If you are using Photoshop, then find a star brush set, and change the settings of them so they have spacing between them and lots of spacing and size jitter, then draw the glow trail with the pen tool, gaussian blur it, then trace the middle of the glow trail and use stroke path with your modified brush.
    If that made any sense.
