Thread: Tips for making backs?

    Default Tips for making backs?

Hey guys I haven't made a boxart in quite sometime. Probably around 4-5 months actually. I recently got back into it, and I'm loving it so far! Anyway, I have always had a VERY hard time making backs to boxarts. I find it so difficult to make screenshot borders and place them correctly to make it all fit together and look good. Does anyone have any tips or directions they could give me for making backs or just simply boxarts in general? Thanks in advance.

I would love to know where people get their borders. I have no idea.

At first, what really helped me was looking at quite a few official backs, seeing how they did certain things and try to emulate them on my own. After a few tries you will find it much easier, and you will improve quite a bit. Looking at some boxes on the site for inspiration isn't a bad idea either. Just don't copy someones box. The resources section of the site has a pretty good selection of screenborders and other resources you will need. And if you can't find something you need there you will most likely be able to find it by searching the resources forum of the site. It takes a while at first to really get the hang of it, but once you do you will be a much more improved artist.

Is it okay to jack screen borders from official boxes? Or is that a no-no?

I don't see why this would be an issue, considering that we use the artwork and images from games as is.

The first thing I do when I am making a back to a box art is look around the archive and see what other people are doing and then I look through official box art work and see if I can get any inspiration their layouts and choice of artwork ect. Theres nothing wrong with using someone else's work as inspiration as long as you make the final product your own.

when i make a back, i try to get the feel of what the game is like, i put screenshots in that give you a clear image (in your head) of what type of game your about to buy. eg. if it's a first-person shooter, try to get an image of a soldier with his weapon in view and then another one with a shot of a first-person view, with the soldier aiming down the sights and perhaps firing it at the enemy, now they give you an idea that it is a first-person (war/battle) game...

I personally think you should jack the border off an official instead of some laser beam ugly crap. Helps you learn.
