Default The Official "Devil May Cry: Devil May Cry" Thread

Okay guys, I was reading up on Kotaku just now when I saw a topic that said there was a new Devil May Cry game. It felt like Christmas morning, I was so excited! Then I clicked on the link.

    http://kotaku.com/5638588/new-devil-...-debut-trailer

And within, I find, much to my terror, confusion, rage, and devastation that this is supposed to be some sort of reboot of the series being worked on by Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory and that Dante is now some psychotic douche. The debut trailer is taking itself WAY too seriously to be Devil May Cry, one of my most beloved game series.

I know that Capcom is trying to learn from the West to make their games more gritty, and thus, more successful in the West, but it looks like putting in Ninja Theory's hands was the WRONG F**KING PLAN. I am beside myself with anger right now, it's like if they rebooted Final Fantasy to have the burly, gruff character style as Gears of War. YOU DON'T DO THIS!!! And I thought I was upset when they changed up Cole in inFAMOUS, and he only had one game behind him.

I just need to vent this and share this with others that will share my outrage.

There's already been some rage in the conversation thread. It's pretty crazy to be honest, he looks nothing like Dante. He's all lanky, and the white hair's gone, he smokes... so many things wrong.

I think Capcom's attempt to better appeal to western gamers has failed. This is pretty bad.

I was sure that this would have made it to the Conversation Thread by now, but this is such a shift, I felt it needed its own thread. Apparently his hair is just starting to turn white (WTF!?) and is only a patch on the top of his head.

I liked the action, but so little of what I saw matched my expectations and my whole reason for loving the series in the first place. It's just NOT the Devil May Cry I know and love. I'm EXTREMELY disappointed in Capcom for going this route.

As you said, so many things wrong.

Speaking as someone that isn't really a fan of the series, I like the new look. New Dante is just a beautiful thing, IMO, and the style is interesting, so it may actually be the first DMC game I pick up. I understand why people would be upset, though.

Reading up on other peoples' thoughts on the trailer, it's possible that it really isn't Dante...

    - The fact that he had a cigarette in damn near every scene. Capcom's made it obvious before that Dante's not a smoker, maybe this is them trying to give off the message that it really isn't him.
    - Physically he's way too different. He's some short, skinny, lanky dude with black hair (besides the white patch). He looks absolutely nothing like Dante.
    - He's being held captive by mere chains. Now I'm no DMC expert, but shouldn't Dante be strong enough to break free from something as simple as that?

Who knows, maybe I'm just fooling myself (as are others).

Dev A: "Say, we got a lot of e-mail about ditching Dante in the last game, what should we do now?"
Dev B: "Suppose we should focus fully on Dante now... OH OH!"
    Dev A: "What!?"
Dev B: "How about we do the same thing as every other developer and reboot our series!?"
    Dev A: "Brilliant!"
Dev B: "We can scrap his old design entirely and we can make Dante look like a junkie"
    Dev A: "Brilliant!!"
Dev B: "And then, and then, the government is like doing secret tests on him!"
    Dev A: "Brilliant!!!"
Dev B: "Oh, and I have really been getting into these really shitty indie bands who'll be happy to provide us an OST!"
    Dev A: "BRILLIANT!!!"

It's like they intentionally attempted to ruin every aspect of DMC that I found fun.

"Kamiya based his idea of Dante on what he perceived as "Stylish" -- with a long coat to make the character "showy", witty like a "British guy", and a non-smoker since Kamiya sees that as more cool."
It is indeed a precious gift to understand the forces that guide oneself.

It's a reboot, that's why they've pretty much changed everything. You can pretty much consider DMC1-4 a different canon entirely. I've heard things saying that it's a prequel to DMC3, but I find that unlikely.

Oh... well that's bullshit. Disregard everything I just said then. :P

Well, I can look at it this way, if I pretend this is another guy entirely that just happens to also be named Dante, it might be ok. I'll probably check it out just to see if it's any good.

Really lame reboot. Also wasn't needed.
DMC hasn't gotten stale yet. The series has been up and down, and this was their chance to make it great again, and they totally blew it.

    A reboot isn't a remake, guys.

Here's how to solve your problem. Get the original DMC, print out a new cover for it that says "DMC REMAKE!" or something. There you go: exactly what you wanted.

    What?

I never said I wanted a remake of the original. I'm fine with it on PS2.

I just don't need a reboot. I was fine with continuing the story where 4 left off. Nero grew on me quite a bit, and I wanted to see what he would do next.

I'm just terribly upset that they have destroyed pretty dang near everything I held dear about the series. I want things to be over the top, I want the hero character to look like something out of an anime. Last time things got serious in a Devil May Cry game was Devil May Cry 2, and guess what? The fans HATED it. I'm not a big fan of reboots in the first place. If it's not broken, why fix it? That's how I feel about this.

I'm very very mixed feeling about this..
I've never played more than the demo for DMC4 and it was badass, but..

    I'm not sure.
Dante looks like a total badass when kicking ass in this trailer.. but he also looks like a douchey little, user, emo, v-necking mother lover...
Ehh.. I don't know about the story or even his personality, but I think this guy just comes off as more likable.

Also, who wants to explain why it's a urban setting? Maybe I'm mistaken, but arent these game in more of a mid evilish type time?
    Again, I just don't know.

It has definitely been modern time

I don't get why they're rebooting the series.

But really, the old Dante looked fine. If they wanted to give him black hair, they should've just recolored the old Dante's hair.

They didn't need to reboot the series, they needed to leave the game where it was.

Here's an idea for the game's opening.

    "What is your name?"
    ...
    "What is your name?"
    ...
    "Dante."
    "Wrong answer!"
*guy on speaker reveals himself to be classic, white-haired Dante, jumps in and drop-kicks the fuck out of the new Dante*

    Dante: "Let's rock!"
*cool industrial metal music plays while Dante slays the fuck out of countless demons*

That'd be the best possible thing Capcom could do.
