My personal opinion is that i'm glad the fad wore out. So many people failed to realize what it meant to try and capture the essence of what the game is. For me, if I were to do one, I would make a list of the moments and concepts that were memorable about the game.
90% of them left a bad taste in my mouth. Many just did the silhouettes and the splatters and I didn't see the essence at all. The one that sticks out the most is when somebody was trying to do an essence box for Punch-Out! for Wii and somebody else mentioned that the person had captured the essence of de Blob.

Well, I'm making an essence box art , and its the essence of VGBoxart, which is YOU the community. Here's a screnshot to show you what my size is going to be approx (33 * 50 grid = 1650 users o.O)

Hopefully my arms don't fall off.

Well the idea came from avatar mix up week. Initially I was going to make an animated box that changed avatars (you know those covers or images that depending on the angle of view show 1 of 2 images?) But vgboxart doesn't accept animations, so it got shifted to essence.

Also, just an idea, but maybe you could change the hue of some of the pictures in the middle so that it would sorta be like the VGBA logo?
