    GEARS OF WAR 3

My friend came over with it and we finished the campaign in one sitting. I'm a huge fan of the first two and was very dissapointed with this one, mainly because of the look of the game. It doesent even look like a Gears game most of the time. It feels like it's set in almost a completely different world. The first two games were dark and gritty and this one has bright vivid colours almost all the time. Instead of building on top of the great world they had created in the first two games it feels like they just copy and pasted environments from Bulletstorm jfkhfhjggjuraga. That beautiful architecture from the first game is pretty much gone, the final tower looks like something from fucking final fantasy. While playing this game the environments never reminded me of the first 2 games, instead they reminded me more of Halo Reach or Bulletstorm. I respect that Epic wanted to try something different, in fact i was one of the people who was wanting to see some more colour after Gears2, but they went way too far, it didnt feel like Gears to me. There was only really 2 or 3 chapters that felt in line with the original games.

The gameplay also seems faster paced, more run n gun, cover doesent seem as necessary, though this might just be because i was playing on normal, but still.

Overall i was very dissapointed with the campaign, alot of the time i felt like i was playing a lesser third-person shooter rather than an actual Gears game. In my opinion it wasnt the finale that the first 2 great games deserved.
Despite my dissapointments though it is still quite a solid game, good length campaign, decent story - i was actually quite satisfied with the ending cutscene or everything that came after that meh final boss.

I give the campaign 7/10. I havent played enough multiplayer to give a score but its pretty decent, i prefer the maps from Gears 2.

This line interests me greatly. Heavy reliance on cover kinda annoys me in games. Still need to finish GoW1 & 2 first anyway

    Silent Hill 4 - 8.5/10

Engrossing, once I got the controller in my hand I couldn't put it down. It was great fun, an enjoyable story and some freaky horror moments that made me jump. Favourite of the series apart from SH2, which is my favourite one.

Still haven't played Homecoming yet, I'm about to start though.

    Dark Souls - 7/10

DAMN GAME!!!!!!!! Has an unforgivable learning curve, cheap deaths, and within the first 30 minutes of gameplay I got sat on by a monster, and killed by a rolling boulder which was pushed down the stairs. I fell of a precipice four times, got poisoned 20 times and died over 60 times before I beat it in 20+ hours (No idea how long, I think it was somewhere around 28 hours, but I can't be sure).

It's good, but the combat is sluggy and repetetive. The gameplay is clunky and boring in parts and most of it is just the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over again. It's not a bad game, but it's insanely difficult and repetetive.
    Signatures are lame.
Hence why I don't have one.
    Because I'm awesome.

    Fallout New Vegas

Fallout, to me, is one of the most witty, well written and generally the best games around. But then there is Bethesda, I have stated countless times that how much I dislike the third installment, if it even is deserving of the title. Well, Bethesda decided to be a bunch of lazy pricks(like the amount of content in 3 wasn't already a dead ringer of there half ass development cycles) and gave the game to Obsidian Game Studios, where it is not only a habit to release glitchy games but it's down right their motto. Although if I were being honest I loved Neverwinter Nights 2.

Obsidian in all core aspects consists of the original Black Isle studios team. Aka those guys who made the Fallout things and Planescape Torment. This is what compelled me to play the game. Fallout New Vegas, gameplay wise, is essentially Fallout 3. In fact, It IS Fallout 3 without all the crap storytelling and Todd Howard stroking his dick. Fallout New Vegas from start to finish has to be my favorite game released this generation. It's witty writing makes up for it's glitches and it has actual moral dilemmas and likable characters. Who knew! This is what Fallout 3 should have been instead of being oblivion with assault rifles. I am not use to talking about things I like so I should cut this short.

I give it four potato chips left in this bag of lays on my desk.

+ Solid and fun gunplay. Each gun feels different and is fun to use. Plus you get alternative ammo types which makes gun play even more varied.
+ Wingsticks and sentry bots. Just so much fun to use!
+ AI. The way it moves and reacts to you is really great. Especially mutants fell like they are part of the environment.
+ Graphics are pretty neat. Close up textures are blurry but overall look is sharp...oh and it runs on 60fps!
+ Character animations. Each character has unique animations and are always fun to look at when interacting.
+ Mini-games. Especially the card game. Very addicting and just fun to play around when not doing missions.

    - Repetitive missions. Feels like you're doing same stuff except in different environment.
    - Weak story. Did not fully understood the whole narrative of the game.
    - Side quests. Usually give you money or other useless stuff and are almost exactly the same as main missions.
    - The ending...

    7/10 (not including multiplayer)

    Batman: Arkham City - 9.5/10

Without doubt one of the most hyped games of this year. A sequel to the "Would-be" game of 2009 (if people didn't overinflate MW2) and without a doubt the most fantastic videogame I've played in quite a while.

+ Graphics - Not usually one to care about graphics, but I couldn't help but notice how polished and smooth they looked and ran. A solid frame-rate which never slowed or increased (unless using remote Batarang in slow-mo) and an overall solid design of a well-thought out city.

+ Better Free-roam - They did well with Arkham Asylum in '09 but the asylum was quite linear in the amount of content it had. You were, essentially, locked in the asylum for the entire game. In Arkham City that improved upon the open-world gameplay and adapted a city, larger and filled with more optional side-quests that the previous instalment.

+ Story - Great story, the cast ranged from Zsaaz to Joker, Hugo Strange and of course, the Riddler (who I got to face). Each boss fight was unique, unlike AA which was essentially Batman fighting the same Titan infected brute for half the game and the ending. This story somewhat takes from AA and expands upon it. Titan still exists and there's side missions where you team with **** and find the Titan tanks to destroy them.

+ Cameo boss fight - Near the end of the game there's quite an epic treat for hardcore Batman fans, as a relatively new fan I didn't really know who this character was until I did some research, so as far as adding in a GIANT easter egg goes, Rocksteady did a solid job.

+ Catwoman - Really broke up the gameplay, for a little while you play as Batman, coursing on the story quest through Arkham City, and then you play as Catwoman. Her gameplay is smoother, faster and a lot more aerial based than Batman's usual stealth system gameplay. Plus, she crawls along ceilings like freaking Spider-Man.

+ Riddler trophies - A bit strange to add this, but I felt they really expanded upon the trophy collection this time around. It's no longer "Blow up wall, walk through vent" to get one of his green trophies, this time you have to solve puzzles which can include tossing a remote controlled batarang through a ventilation system into a switch. A very challenging experience, and his riddles were somewhat tougher to solve too.

+ Combat - Better than the original game, I strung together a 65 hit combo early in the game. It takes a while to master, but since I played through AA 4 times it wasn't that tough to control. As I knew the control scheme already.

No negatives, a near on perfect game. Apart from a few dodgy moments in combat it's a solid game.

This, Gears 3 and most likely UC3 will be GOTY contenders for me.
    Signatures are lame.
Hence why I don't have one.
    Because I'm awesome.

The narrative was that Carmack wanted to make a fallout ripoff story so he did.

Well it was obvious that the game resembles Fallout 3 and Borderlands but that doesn't mean it should not exist. The story in such a world as RAGE could have been incredibly interesting if they hired some decent writers.

I thought RAGE looked kind of fun but after everything I've seen and heard of it, it seems pretty lame.

I've been playing some Super Mario World, and so far I'd give it an 8.5/10. It's probably my favorite Mario platformer game.

No, story was a blatant ripoff. The game is alright.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record (PC with DualShock 3)

+ I've covered wars, you know.
+ All around great game, retaining all that was great about vanilla Dead Rising 2 and adding to it.
+ The Sandbox Mode is great. Finally I can explore the game city at my own leisure, without worrying about Dead Rising's occasionally harsh time limits.

    - For someone who has completely exhausted all the content of vanilla Dead Rising 2, this probably isn't a worthwhile purchase, at least not on it's current prize.
    - Sometimes the controls don't respond at all, systematically ignoring commands I give, with both my pad and K+M. This may be an issue with Steam Community overlay, since I have not had this problem since I disabled the overlay.
    - Multisampling in this game is terrible. It distorts color and makes the game really blurry. Just turn it off at first chance.

I give this game a 9/10. Again, this isn't worth the money for someone who has done absolutely everything that you could do in the original version. But for people who've played Dead Rising 2 maybe once through, the game can offer enough new content to justify a purchase (it did for me) and for people who haven't played Dead Rising 2 at all, this definite version of the game is an absolutely magnificent purchase.

£20 Isn't much... but I'm gonna wait a while anyway. Need to get Halo and Skyrim first

    Splinter Cell Conviction Trial Version

8.5/10, not sure I'm a fan of the more action-oriented approach to gameplay, but the Mark and Execute system is pretty cool. I also liked during the second stealth portion when the classic Splinter Cell 1 music kicked in.

    Arkham City 9.5/10
Better than Asylum in everyway! Storywise, area, gadgets, playability, combat. Just everything was perfectct. Sadly, it seemed alot shorter than Arkham Asylum, I managed to beat it in about 8 hours, and I spent alot of time searching the city. I also felt the final boss could have been more exciting. But a perfect game none the less. Still have alot of time to go through collecting all the secrets, then all the Catwoman DLC and then New Game+

    8 / 10

Technically speaking, Arkham City does little to differentiate itself from it's predecessor. A bit rough around the edges in areas, but overall a good looking game. Atmospherically is where Rocksteady hit the nail on the head. The dark, gloomy world of Arkham City glows brilliantly against the snowy winter night, and very nicely hits home the idea of a city-wide prison slowly decaying under the foot of criminals and madmen. Musically the game is, save a song or two, forgettable. I'll give it a few points for letting you have a custom soundtrack, though.

Gameplay is more or less the same as Arkham Asylum. Despite adding new gadgets and combos to Batman's repetiore, the combat remains fluid and easy to pick up. Special enemies like blade and shield wielders aren't nearly as irritating as in Arkham Aslyum, although I still find it baffling how Batman hits enemies' stun batons even when they're stunned themselves. Is he aiming for it? I was disappointed in the stealth sections though, not because of how they played out, but because there were so few of them. I always preferred them to the brawls in AA.

This is probably as close to a true, free-roaming Batman game as we're going to get. It's not Gotham City, but it'll do. The world map is relatively small compared to other sandboxes, but the countless easter eggs and references are sure to please fans of the comic book lore. I wish the same could be said of the side missions themselves, which usually devolve into "go here, find this" or "go here, beat up this". Similarly are the Riddler trophies, clocking in at 400, will become repetitive and chore-like way before you hit 100%.

Story-wise, there's little I can say without spoiling major plot points. At times, the pacing is off and the plot unfocused. A few characters tend to come and go with little consequence, sometimes reappearing much later on with little explanation or reasoning. Two plot twists near the end of the game are notable. One not only being predictable, but also kind of anticlimactic in and of itself. The other being a wonderfully neat revelation and lead-up to the game's best (and easiest) boss fight.

I sound a bit one-sided in this little write-up, but I did really enjoy the game. It simply didn't live up to the god-like hype, but I didn't expect it to either.

+ Freeflow combat is as fluid as ever
+ Arkham City is a deeply atmospheric world
+ Boss fights are actually boss fights this time
+ Mark Hamill deserves an award more prestigious than the VGAs for his performance as the Joker

    - Story and pacing struggle occasionally
    - Content aside the story needs more variety
    - Too few scare tactics and stealth sections
    - Catwoman DLC is included but separate?

+ Dual-wielding plasmids and guns at the same time
+ New plasmids/new upgrades to old plasmids
+ New guns and ammo types (remote hacking tool)
+ New enemy types, such as Brutes and Big Sisters
+ More Rapture exploration is always good
+ More moral choices involved throughout the story

    - Not as groundbreaking or unique as the first BioShock
    - Story isn't as good as the firsts' game
    - Games for Windows Live

9.0/10 (single player only, took ~14 hours to complete)
