What are you TALKING about?
Story: The Avatar story is a classic, a coming-of-age tale mixed with a classic American Western mixed with romance. Whether you compare it to the Trail of Tears and the evacuation of the American Indians from their land by President Jackson, or consider it to be a perfect social commentary along the lines of District 9 regarding how we as humans would react to discovering aliens, you can't deny that Avatar takes a classic story, a timeless, relevant story, and makes it beautiful.
Characters: The characters are archetypal. The hard-ass military man; the independent, tough, caring princess; the outsider, overcoming his previous perceptions. Among others of course. But there's a reason these characters are archetypes; We relate to them, they tell a timeless tale, and they work, and are enjoyable to watch. And besides the fact that they are archetypes, they are also deep. The world itself was a character, the animals, the trees.. as the story says, they are all connected, and if the idea of having an intimate, physical connection with nature, a process of literally connecting yourself to a network of memories ages old, does not make the Avatar the deepest of any movie this year, I don't know what does.
Acting: I imagine it's much, much more difficult to act when your actual body is not in the movie. When you HAVE to rely on your facial expression to convey emotions, and are unable to see or interact with a physical environment. That's what you're seeing with the Avatar actors. Not only are you WRONG, and their acting was great, especially the princess and Jake, but the sheer difficulty of acting for a situation you cannot see or feel makes them all incredible actors.
So no, Avatar did not fail at any of those.
My opinion of avatar:
The visuals were beautiful. Some fantastic special effects; some of the best (although my favorites were probably District 9). Just a beautiful sight. The story on the other hand, was geeeeeeneeeeriiiiic.
Sherlock Holmes, 7.8/10. Awesome movie, and very smart writing. RDJ is brilliant btw.
The day the Earth Stood Still.
7/10.
I dunno, it was alright. Just not spectacular.
From Dusk Till Dawn
5/10
Terrible effects but I thought some of it was pretty humorous. It was supposed to be funny, right?
Well The last 3 movies I saw were;
Slumdog Millionaire 10/10
Shallow Grave 10/10
Trainspotting 10/10
I love FilmFour's Danny Boyle season. I missed a Life Less ordinary last night sadly though...
Sherlock Holmes 7/10
Very intelligent film and a rather interesting plot.
Youth in Revolt 9/10
The movie was Michael Cera's best. His alternate personality would just say some of the funniest shit you've ever heard.
Hancock - 7.5/10
The first half was cool, but it got really lame when they decided to give the woman superpowers. It felt like they came up with the general premise, which I liked (an alcoholic bum with superpowers) but they had to come up with something to make it a full length movie - a villain and some personal complications, for example. I thought it was a pretty original take on a superhero story, but the plot beyond the general concept needed work. Hancock is a pretty cool character and the supporting guy was quite likeable, but it got too cheesy after the first hour.
It's what I do.![]()
Avatar, 9.9/10 lol, wish it could have been longer, then it would get a 10.
James Cameron + Action Film + Possible Trilogy = Awesome.
Loved the film itself, absolutley awesome and breathtaking, the screenplay was brilliant, the storyline was emmense and the action never stopped, if there is a second then i can't wait for it.
Silent Hill - 8/10
I love this movie to death. The movie looks gorgeous, there are chracters you actually care about, the plot is very easy to understand and is enjoyable (Roger Ebert is an idiot for not being able to understand the plot) And even though it maybe not be a carbon copy of the games its a nice addition to the Silent Hill mythos.
