What!? There so IS a timeline!

Ocarina of Time (Adult Timeline) --> The Wind Waker --> Phantom Hourglass --> Spirit Tracks

Ocarina of Time (Child Timeline) --> Majora's Mask --> Twilight Princess

The Minish Cap --> Four Swords --> Four Swords Adventures (currently unconfirmed if other games occur between these titles, i.e. between TMC and FS)

A Link to the Past --> Link's Awakening

The Legend of Zelda --> Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (usually placed after the above two)

Oracle of Seasons <--> Oracle of Ages (can happen in either order)

Actually at one point Nintendo said they had a long and detailed timeline of the Zelda series in their main office, so they can always place new games on it.

It is also stated that Ninty places new Zelda games on said timeline AFTER it's completion.

lol, no matter what they say, as long as they have games, games with stories, and events that happen in sequence, and all that jazz, it's inevitable to have a timeline to go with it... xD

The first video was real good.

As far as Nintendo not having a time line. That's a bit depressing.

Eiji Aonuma and Shigeru Miyamoto have both publicly stated that there is a master document containing the timeline.

There is a timeline. Well... It's just more than one timeline. Somewhere I read that each Link was a different one. But basically you can't put every game into one whole entire timeline.

It's a variation of the same legened in Wind Waker starting it says "This is but one of the legends of which people speak" as in link through the eye's of many Species of hyrule:

Zora: Wind Waker, Phantom Hour Glass and Spirit Tracks
Shikah: Link To The Past, The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II
Hylian: Minish Cap(First Story), Four Swords Adventures (possibly their version of links next adventure) and Ocarina of Time (true story)
Kokri/Koroks: Majora's Mask (Their Version of Links next adventure) and Twilight Princess
Gorons: Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages

Possibly thats it a variation of one legend told differently through hyrule

What I don't understand is, if there's no timeline, how are there references to characters from past games? (The Hero of Time in Wind Waker)

    Can that be explained?

This is true, and as much as I hate the idea of it, they actually canonized the "Split Timeline". So really, it's not even a "theory", it's blatant fact.

Yeah, they've kind of subliminally made it know on a few occasions that there is no one universal "Link". The first clue, at least as i always considered it, was that you name the character in certain games. In recent memory, at the start of Twilight Princess, "Link" is told that the traditional green hero's garb has been worn by many heroes throughout time when he receives it.

A time line of some reasonable continuity has to exist in some form or fashion though, if for no other reason than so the designers can get some kind of idea of what to work with.

In OoT and Majoras Mask, Link was the Hero of Time right?
Then the next Link wasn't the hero of time. Is... Is this correct?

Well I recall that in TLOZ: TWW, the incarnation of Link was called the hero of wind, *Obligatory fart joke here*.

Those need to be switched. I don't recall the child Link being in Twilight Princess. But, also it isn't "Child" Link, it Toon Link, which is a cartoon version of Link, not Link's kid. So, really you have to mix them together. This could also happen in any order, Majora's Mask could have taken place after Wind Waker or Ocarina of Time could have taken place after Phantom Hourglass, its also been confirmed. /thread.

There has to be a timeline, or else there is chaos. If there is chaos, there is no story, and Link just walked outside one day and said " I'm going to kill some pig guy because I can. But first, I'll have to do some annoying quest with a stupid Fairy, even though Ganon left the back door open."

Yea, I just bashed my favourite series. Deal with it.

Okay Tucker time toe explain. Child Link would be in Twilight Princes because it's years after Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask. And in Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass Toon Link can be Links child for the reason that there is a refrence to the adult Link who is known as "The Warrior of Time". Hope that clears it up for you.
