Default Time to move beyond VG?

The site has kind of evolved beyond just game boxes - more into boxes or covers for almost anything really. Movie, TV, music, magazines and wallpapers...posters. There are quite a lot of movie and music entries, despite the site's focus on games.

So it's kind of a mecca for photoshop masters and would-be masters in the art of arranging assets (existing and self-created) into something new and interesting for all types of media. Maybe this is the direction that should be more encouraged and that the site should move toward. Many have become masters of game box arts, but what about masters of movie boxes or magazine covers or posters?

What I've been considering for a long time and have mentioned in the past was recreating the site as a "box artist" site instead of simply a "video game box artist" site. So it'd become The BoxWorks or something along those lines. The ultimate goal could be to have a MasterWorks entry in all the main categories.

    Let's hear some thoughts/ideas.

Well, I think it would definitely attract more users, but that could be good or bad.

If its changes I say just call it 'Boxart' .com, I dislike the name The Boxworks.

BoxArt.com would be great, but anything that simple is going to be taken. So is the BoxWorks (so couldn't actually use that - it's just an example, but it's close to what I'm looking for).

I think it would be best to leave it as VGBoxArt. We all know that DVD's and CD's are OK to upload, and as other members join so will they, the only benefit i see is we will get more members and then again, that could turn-out to be a bad-thing. and besides, all existing users will have to remember the new domain, and it will all be far too confusing. Sorry Reed, thats just how I feel...

Not that your gonna probably listen to me, I think its fine the way it is, staying as vgboxart. If we change it, than more users will come, and we'll have movie boxes and music boxes, which will flood out the video game ones. Maybe as a pilot project, launch another website, but thats it. Leave it as VGBA.

    There already is a boxart.com.

I think it should just be kept as is. Maybe magazine covers for video game magazines, but anything beyond that is just silly. Besides, book and magazine covers are pretty bland. Book covers generally have handdrawn art and magazine covers are just pictures.

The thing about the categories we have now is that they're all the final incarnation of the piece of media in question. A home release is the final step in movies, music, and games, so they have to be packed to catch your eye. A teaser poster for a movie is almost always really empty, which draws you in with anticipation for something unknown. Open the site up to include "easy" art and it'll be flooded with worthless submissions from people hoping to turn a quick fave because it's "new" and "minimalistic" and "stylish".

Not a bed idea Reed! It may make our website more popular and well-known which surely cant be a bad thing... right?

Boxart or BoxWorks are lame names though! You need to think of something simple yet appealing! Maybe have a little competition to come up with a new name for the website? And the prize could be.... I dunno..... Moderator powers for a day?

Yes, I would also like to see some Cereal Box cover art, Soda Can cover art, DVD-R spindle cover art, and so on.

I choose to visit Cdcovers.com for other covers, I visit this site for video game covers and occasionally other covers.

I prefer it being mostly about video games because that's why I joined in the first place. I feel it would lose the charm if its turned into something else and its personality is changed. It might lose its appeal when it tries to appeal to a bigger demographic, because it could become less tight, more packed and less focused. This doesn't feel right to me...

My opinion is that a sister site for movies, cd's etc would be better than changing this whole site to all kinds of box arts.
