    Default Commenting etiquette

I'm getting really fed up with the attitude of some people, who apparently have an overinflated sense of self-worth, and comment on boxes with nothing but; "This is crap" or "Don't like it" or "It's bad".

This also applies to people who flat out say, "You need to do x, y and z". No, they don't need to do what you say. You can only suggest.

If you are not being helpful or constructive or supportive with your comment, then don't bother posting. If you do post this nonsense, then expect your comment to be deleted and/or find yourself banned.

To sum up; if you are not being a supportive member of the community, then you are not going to be welcome any longer.

    Some things to remember:
    1) You are not god's gift to Photoshop.
    2) Even if you were, do you see folks like Marker being an ass? No, it's always nice and helpful. Do look into that. There may be something to it.
    3) Comment on other people's boxes how you'd like them to comment on yours.

While I agree with most of the points there, I dis-agree with the one about 'You need to do x, y and z". Saying they need to do it, doesn't necessarily mean that you are forcing them to do it, its just a way to say that 'to improve' they need to do this etc.

    Anyway, I mostly agree.

I get tired of seeing comments like "Good, but not your best." By itself, it's probably the most pointless comment that I see people post on boxes. C&C is key, not some vague statement that doesn't offer any advice to improve.

I originally thought this was addressing rudeness in general, and telling all of the dick users to be more friendly, in which case I was going to say something like "You tell 'em, Reed! I get so sick of asshole users saying mean things!"

It would have been funny. You know, for the irony.

But since it's more about constructive posting than dickery, then I don't think I really have a rebuttal. Because I'm constructive in my assholery. Sometimes.

I admit I use to be one of those people who wrote comments like "Omg this is shit" or "Its crap, you need to add this, that or the other" but I have changed alot since then and I always try my best to give constructive criticism comments rather than just criticism.

However I think you'll find the majority of people who leave comments like "Its bad" are newbies who recently joined the site. Maybe you should make it more clear somehow Reed that these comments are not acceptable. Just a lil suggestion.

Well, yeah, you can't force them to do anything. The problem is that it gives off a holier-than-thou kind of attitude, and it's also confusing for newer members. "Oh, I need to have 3 screenshots on the back?"

This would be great if the site were for five-year-olds that couldn't handle criticism. The Internet is a serious place, Reed; you can't expect everyone to be all smiles all the time.

If someone posts a box that I think isn't up to their standards, then I'm going to tell them. And I'm not going to have any regrets about it. I don't bullshit people and I wouldn't expect people to bullshit me.

The point is that it should still be constructive. Simply saying, "Sorry, this box isn't up to your standards." isn't helpful at all.

^This. I try to be as constructive as I can be, but I'm not going to sugar-coat it. If I see something that can be improved upon, I will mention it. If I happen to be blunt about it, it's because I see no reason to prance around the bushes in a fairy outfit just for appearances sake. It's the way I was treated when I came here, it's the way I treat people, and it works. It's harsh, but it gets the point across, and most of the time it gets results, if the artist really cares. However, I do tend to be more blunt and less nice about things the more that I feel that an artist doesn't give a rat's shat about whether or not they improve.

To be honest this isn't that rude. The box does need that from their perspective/opinion, it can still be classified as a suggestion. It can be too repetitive to write it was your opinion, when this fact is usually already established before we read the post.

Is there going to be a report button for this?

I do agree though, i see this quite often and it usually leads me away from commenting on a box in general.

I always find it a bit sad when people have to be told to act like a decent individual. It reminds me of a story that ran here in Philly a few months back. Basically a company hired a firm to educate their employees to be courteous to customers and to teach them to say 'thank you'.

I think in some ways this can be helpful, but at the same time rude. But IMO when some one tells me that I view as To make this better try.... But some one might find it as Do this or else. But its usually IMO constructive.
