Default How Do I Animate An Avatar?

Yeah, I've been wondering this for a long time now and I've tried doing it on my own, but it never works. I know I have to save it as a .GIF but how do I actually animate it?

I use paint.net, but I downloaded GIMP so that I could see if I could do it in there, but it's a little overcomplicated for me.

If you have Adobe ImageReady, you can import a movie clip into the program and export it as a gif.
