I have Photoshop, and so far i'm getting along pretty well with it.
but,
I would like to know if GIMP and paint.net are free, and how easy and effective they are.
If you have time, and experience, could someone please respond?

Well, I use GIMP. It's free, pretty easy to learn, but hard to master...

I use aintNET, easy to learn, easy to master. You can download plug-ins which are awesome. I just don't like Gimp. ^^

GIMP is the best one out of the lot.
It's basically a downed version of Photoshop. It's easy to learn. Paint.Net is just Paint with a bunch of filters/gradients really.
