I usually do shading on separate layers. I don't know much on GIMP's capabilities, so I'll leave it at that. I use Photoshop or Sai in some cases.

The drawing on lined paper doesn't do much to show your artistry is all. The colors of the character himself are fine. I'm talking shading and highlights. Sorry if you were offended by my thoughts.

Next time, don't do a picture on lined paper, try inking digital or remove the lines of the paper. Not too bad, just play with colors more. Use complimentary colors to make your painting pop more....
