Nintendo has just announced the Wii MotionPlus, a plug-in adapter for the Wiimote that, as Nintendo describes it, can more quickly and accurately reflect motions in a 3-D space. This announcement comes just hours before Microsoft's E3 press conference, where the console rival is rumored to be showing its answer to the Wiimote.
"The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion," says Nintendo. "Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo's commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone."
Nintendo will be showing off the Wii MotionPlus at its press conference tomorrow (Tuesday, July 15). Will the rumored Punch-Out! be one of the first titles to make use of it? We'll have to wait and see. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how Nintendo positions the add-on. On one hand, it's great to see Nintendo continuing to push things forward in the motion control space, on the other, some will question why this wasn't included in the Wiimote in the first place, as it will potentially fragment the market.
