Looking for a game...

This might seem a stupid question, but... anyone know any good RTS's on the PS2? Before you all go "are you out of your mind? they blow on consoles" well it's for my friend, he likes those kind of games but there's not many on consoles. And yes there are actually a couple of them on consoles that actually work (C&C3, Universe at War) and are fun to play. He doesn't plan to play online against real-life opponents but just for a bit of fun now and then. He's not a gamer so he doesn't really care if the game allows complete accurate control over units or whatever.

So if all you're going to say is something like "Strategy games suck on PS2, the end" or "Tell him to get a 360 + COD4" then don't bother commenting at all. I just want some suggestions.

I'm not a big RTS fan myself but I asked a mate on MSN who is and he says Dynasty Tactics is one of the better RTS's available on the PS2. Tell your friend to give that a try.

C&C Red Alert on PS1 is decent for a console RTS. After the PS1 era they pretty much phased out console RTS games because they realised how much they sucked. The only reason a couple of RTS games have been ported to 360 is because 360 has similar architecture to PC, therefore an minimal effort for moderate profit, because no matter how much a genre sucks on a console, there are always complete noobs who buy them (such as one of my friends.. he bought LOTR: BFME2 on 360.. and when he got his PS3 the first game he got was Lair)

is there some kind of USB mouse+keyboard available for the PS2? Cuz that'd help a lot if you're playing a console RTS with really awkward controls. Anyway, even if they completely blow ass, just mention any games you know, just for future reference, in case all else fails and I have to tell him that ultimately console RTS's suck. I'd hate to dissapoint him because the two games I mentioned earlier are only on PC/360 and they're really good.

PS3 is the only console that allows mouse/keyboard to double for gameplay, and I don't think that includes backwards compatibility.

And it is 97-99% true that console RTS games plain and simply BLOW. For noobs who have never played an RTS on PC, they probably won't realise how bad it is but for those who know how much precision and micro management a PC provides for RTS, it's impossible to play.

See, those who are used to FPS where they control one person, it is quite a novelty to be able to control 200+ men. They get satisfaction from just moving a squad and killing another.

If your friend is even minimally serious about playing RTS games then he simply needs a PC. Even a $400 piece of junk off eBay will let you play games like WH40K: Dawn of War, Warcraft 3, Age of Empires 3, Command and Conquer: Generals.
