I've been going back and fourth in my head for awhile now on whether to get a PS3 or 360. I've ruled out the Wii for the time being as i think outside of the main Nintendo series there is nothing that appeals to me atm. I'll just get my Nintendo fix through my DS.
PS3
Pros
------
Some exclusive game series that i love (e.g. MGS, Final Fantasy) plus new IP's that interest me
Free Online
WiFi ready
Cheap Blu-Ray player
Don't have to worry as much about it breaking
Cons
------
Price
Confusing SKU's (not sure what model will allow me to play my PS1/PS2 collection)
A lot of DLC Exclusivity is on 360
Game library is rather sparse at the moment
Some games require a slight install
Xbox 360
Pros
------
Online seems to be top notch
A large gaming library filled with hits
DLC, XBLA and Achievements
Cons
-------
RROD
No WiFi means either buying an adapter or running an ethernet cable all the way from my office room where the cable modem is, down to my home theater room just to play online =/
I have a gaming PC so i can play some of the 360's bigger hits (e.g. Gears of War, Bioshock, Oblivion etc) with superior graphics, controls and custom mods
Seems to have an over abundance of shooters
RROD
I'm just not sure. I think the biggest thing that's holding me back from picking the 360 is the unusually high failure rates along with the lack of WiFi. So i'd like to get your guys perspective... Pros/Cons
Thanks.

Well... Shoot.
I'd say get a 360 just cause I want to play with you sometime. =D
But since I only own a 360, I can't really give a fair opinion - you'd probably have to talk to someone who has both systems.
As far as the RRoD goes, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the newer systems. If you get an Elite you should be fine.
And Achievements are addictive. >___>
On the subject of online, I have a wireless adapter and it works great for me. They are a little pricey, but you can probably get one for cheap on eBay. I've also heard that you can use a standard non-360 wireless adapter - I actually used my brother's old one for his original Xbox for a while.
Hope this helps. ^_^

Actually the newer models of the Xbox 360 have been known to be ALOT more reliable. I mean, they still aren't perfect compared to what they should be like but the chances of getting three red rings are alot less common.
I would suggest getting an Xbox 360 especially if you like online gaming because as you said "Online seems to be top notch." Achievement Points are an amazing addition because it really adds alot of replay value to certain games.
Also the Xbox 360 controller is near enough damn perfect! Feels comfortable to hold, looks sleek and modern, the Xbox Guide button works like a charm. The PS3 controller is a 10 year old design, feels flimsy to hold and doesn't even have vibration (unless you get the new one.)
I have been gaming since 1992 (im 18 now) and I can honestly say the Xbox 360 controller is the best pad i've ever used.

GET ZE 360!!! :D
while you may have to wiring to play online, it's completely worth it. I've only had mine break once and it wasn't even the RROD, just a slight problem with the disc reader. So yes, get the 360.
also I agree with Ryan, I wanna game with you haha

Myself, I would get a PS3. A PS3 is more incline with Hi-Definition than the 360, it's a cheap alternative to a Blu-Ray player. Plus although I'm not the biggest shooter fan ever, I love the Unreal Tournament series, and on the PS3, you can mod the game, which is impossible for a 360 unless you have a card reader or flashdrive. Like the Wii, the PS3 has the option to browse through the internet, and it has free online play.
I'm not much for the 360 because of it's hardware failure. If i were to get a 360, the only games that interest me is Dead Rising. Where's the PS3 port, Capcom? Lost Planet deserved the port, but not Dead Rising?,
Just to let you know, the 80gb version plays both ps1 and ps2 games. The 40gb cannot play any PS2 game, plus it only has 2 usb ports while the 80 has 4.

I say don't give up on wii..
There are definitely some value third party titles, i.e:no more heroes, zach and wiki. And with the price, it's a lot of bang for your buck...

I have neither, but if I had the choice, I'd go with 360. Everybody always talks about how kick-ass it is, and to me the PS3 seems like it tried to live up to the 360 but slightly failed. If you're really serious about playing MGS4, then get a PS3, but one game wouldn't convince me to get a console. What I would do is go over to a friends house sometime and play co-op or something, that's what I do, walk over to my cousin's and play Halo. Of course, Halo's not a game I'm crazy about and I could care less about the story so...
Oh yeah, I live 15 minutes from you so you can come over to play Wii anytime

Hey Slinger, if you've decided on a PS3 now is the time to get it. The MGS4 PS3 bundle is the supposedly the last time you'll be able to get the 80GB PS3, the one with backwards compatibility. They are out of stock except for the bundles. It's $500 for MGS4, 80 GB PS3, a downloadable PSN game, and a few other little things.
I was going through the same thing as you and I finally decided PS3 for mostly the same reasons.

well, i'd wait until later this year to decide. Of course there's MGS4, but we should wait to see what FFXIII's reviews are like. They'll be good, no doubt... but look at FFXII... big dissapointment (well, not big, but you get the point). Not to mention Resistance 2 and LBP... and I wouldn't be suprised if Gears 2 and Halo 3 get ported to the PC in 09. Personally, I'd wait a while before you get them, but looking at your tastes in games i'd probably go for the PS3.

I disagree, I thought FFXII was the best installment so far in the FF series next to FFVI. FFVII coming at 3rd place (series wise) and I've played all of them.
Versus XIII is lookin' good too, btw.

I didn't feel that the game had as much character development as the others, and I didn't like the new battle system. The story didn't interest me as much as FFX and some of the characters were lame. (i.e. Vaan)
but i'm not FF expert, don't listen to my babble :p

I don't know about how much of Matsuno's original vision remained in the final product, but the soundtrack was very weak without Uematsu. (He did a phenomenal job for Lost Odyssey, in comparison)
Although, I didn't mind the gambit system as much as some other people did.

OH MY GOD. Holy War thread.
Sorry, guys, I am not gonna even read it :)
As for me, I choose Xbox 360.
EDIT: New versions of X360 Falcon and Zephyr have different structure so they are not gonna BURN (3 lights of death). So there is no need to worry about it. Also be sure you have a BENQ DVD Drive in your Xbox (if you will buy it).

I would say the Playstation 3, 60GB. Yeah, you all may think it isn't sold anymore... think again! It is sold on Gamestop online "used", but there really isn't a difference. Buy it here... http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=64006
The PS3 has great graphics, you could go online with it, and Home is coming out in Fall, so that is gonna be awesome. Also, the Blu Ray Player, and all those other details.
The 360 is also a good game system, but the PS3 is just... better
Oh yeah, the 60GB link I gave you plays Playstation 2 games (I don't know about Playstation 1), and it has 4 USB ports, so its the best one there is.

I've never understood the appeal of having a browser on a console. Look. No one has a video game system but not a computer. Is there really any reason to surf the Web from your PS3 besides that you CAN? I mean sheesh, it seems that half the features people praise about the PS3 are simply cosmetic rather than functional.
Srsly, who the hell thought it was a good idea to support up to SEVEN controllers? Seven? What the eff? What game would POSSIBLY be fun to play - or even POSSIBLE to play - with seven people?
Vengeance
05-15-2008, 01:47 PM
It is odd to have seven, but it doesn't necessarily mean seven players. It could be anywhere in between that and 1. 4 is probably the maximum that should be played on a single screen, but it never hurts to have extra controller ports for efficiency. The 360 only has 2 controller ports (mine does, anyway) and that really annoyed me because I was going to invite from friends round for a game of GoW.
xIAMHUNTERx
05-15-2008, 01:50 PM
The 360 can support up to four...
Vengeance
05-15-2008, 01:52 PM
can it? if that's for the Premium/Elite systems only, i'm gonna be pissed. Really. My console only has TWO controller ports, in that little flap just underneath the glowing ring (if you stand it up vertically).
xIAMHUNTERx
05-15-2008, 01:57 PM
It's got two more USB ports in the back, or at least it should.
I know it can support four wireless ones - hence the four glowing lights.

yeah, but do they REALLY expect me to fork out another £20 for a wireless controller (that needs batteries, btw.)? Oh yeah... Microsoft always does that...
And isn't one of those USB ports for the network adaptor? Or is that a different socket? Hold on... i'll take a picture

I say 360 all the way. Runs faster, better menu, I don't agree with the breaking, I think PS3's break as much and the new 360's i don't think have a problem. Buy a wireless router so you don't have to run a cord. The biggest thing of all, the 360 has more games and better selection. PS3 has only a couple good ones just like WII.

but the soundtrack was very weak without Uematsu.
Bah...
Sakimoto > Uematsu.
Mainly, because Uematsu has been losing his edge nowadays. His best works for me lie in the NES generation FF's. (Mainly FFVI) Sakimoto (FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, Breath of Fire V, FFXII etc) will always remain as my favorite vg composer.

Hey gents, thanks for all of the input as it is much appreciated. I think since a lot of the 360 games are released on the PC that it would be a waste for me to buy it. Plus the MGS4/80gig PS3 bundle is enticing. A few questions for the PS3 owners here.
1. The 80Gb is compatible with both the PS1/2 games, correct? How would i go about transferring my memory card info onto the PS3?
2. How do i go about setting up a PSN account?
Thanks for the help. :D

1) you need to buy an adapter
2) simply press register under playstation network in the menu

I figured as much about the adapter. I guess i'll just have to return it once i'm done with it. >_> To save PS1/2 games on the PS3 i'm guessing it creates virtual memory cards.

Here are some good exclusives...
MotorStorm
Resistance: Fall of Man
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Heavenly Sword
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Warhawk
And here are some that are coming soon...
Metal Gear Solid 4
InFamous
Resistance 2
MotorStorm 2
So, that's pretty much everything I can think of off the top of my head.
