Help making reflections and fading

Alright, need help wiht doing a reflection, which leads me to my next question: How do you fade a character waist down? I'm still making my Mario party 9 box and I want to fade someone from his/her waist down. Help please?

add a layer mask go to the gradiant tool select the FG to Transparent then go from the bottom of the thing you want to fade up to the top of it
