"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources."

~Albert Einstein

"Creativity is not the finding of a thing, but the making something out of it after it is found."

~James Russell Lowell

"WTF?!?1?! You took all the fun out of it now! Betrayer!"

~Sergant Johnson

It has come to my attention just how selfish the people on this site are. Most of the vets are withholding art from the community. How can you expect people to get better, if all you ever give them as advice is "Google". I remember when I first started on this site....looking for art. All I could find on Google was the random crappy image or something the size of my thumb. And yet here were other people, turning out these gorgeous boxes, with huge images in amazing quality. And I had to wonder where they found those images. After much begging and pleading I finally got the links to certain sites from people who hoarded them, but they always told me to never tell anyone else the link. Why? Why should we keep art a secret? You complain about the quality of noob boxes, and yet you all hoard great art sites from the community. How can noobs get better if they don't have any art to work with? It is with that in mind that I post the links that I have been able to obtain, in hopes that you may all use them as you see fit. I encourage others who have sites they are holding on to to do the same. And remember, it's not the art that makes the box, it's the design. So keep that in mind when you use these images. Do something creative, break out of the mold. Don't just do it because you're bored, but because you really have a great design idea. With that, I present the links:

http://vgaa.emulationzone.org/
(A wealth of video game art from across several platforms and companies)

http://www.sonicresearch.org/art/
(One of the best sources of Sonic Art out there, and all in .png format!)

http://www.gamehiker.com/gallery/
(If it's Nintendo, it's here. Just be careful! They're all .jpg's.)

http://www.planetrenders.net/
(The best source for png art on the net. You can find anything from game art to logos to abstract designs)

http://gamewallpapers.ru/
(A really nice source for wallpapers. It's kind of crazy with the ads, though)

http://www.nintendolife.com/wallpapers
(Seems to be a good source for wallpapers, but a limited selection)

http://www.sonicstadium.org/games/
(Another great source for Sonic art)

http://wall.alphacoders.com/
(Another good source for wallpapers)

www.thecoverproject.net
(This site is great for finding older templates and logos, as long as you know how to render.)

www.tothegame.com
(A really great site for getting fairly decent-sized logos for most modern games.)

Submitted Links:

-Sonic Style link removed because of virus threat- Submitted by GuitarMan
(Another excellent source for Sonic art, with a mix of jpg and png formats)

http://www.creativeuncut.com/game-art-galleries.html Submitted by Ladykiller
(A great source of hi-res jpg images from several games)

http://www.wallpaperez.info/games Submitted by ElCrazy
(A collection of wallpapers in huge resolutions, some from gamewallpapers.com)

Great idea Koopa. So people don't turn it into just another Box Material thread, can it be renamed secret sites? Or something more along those lines. I'll make it a sticky then.

Well, if I have a site that I go to for art that no one else has used, why would I tell the masses about that site? I wouldn't want to have the art that I showcased on a box of mine to be used by hordes of people in the future, which would render my box "unoriginal", despite it being the first box to use that art. And I really wouldn't want that.

And there are some people who would just rape the art completely, giving no regard to design.

I agree, especially on the last part, some noobs really do just hoard all the new material upon release and throw it all in there with very little effort - just so they can show off the new material to the community.

Nonetheless, still a very noble idea.

Here's a wonderful art gallery resource I hope ppl will appreciate: http://www.creativeuncut.com/game-art-galleries.html

If your box is the first to use some art, then more people are bound to check it because it's fresher. As for some people "raping" art, if they want to find some art to make bad use of, they will, used material or not. It should be that the best artists make the more recognized use of it anyway.

It's right that these materials are provided to all the talented to use in different ways. I for one find that people hiding sites is a dodgy affair considering that a central point of this site is to share images.

Honestly, what kind of insecure, selfish, worthless piece of crap would keep source material to themselves? They don't have any right to do so, as commercial material is available to everyone. I mean, are they that afraid that someone's better than them? That they have to take every possible advantage they can get? And besides that, this isn't a contest. If you're doing this for the popularity or to "win," then you're doing it for the wrong reasons. What the hell is wrong with these people?

It's disgusting.

Now let me contribute:

...uh...actually, I either make it myself, or use google, or use google, and use the Photoshop pen tool to make a higher quality version of it.

I can give you this, though: http://good-tutorials.com

It's not material, but it's got loads and loads of handy tricks you can use to make impressive effects.

www.gimptalk.com
^ That site was really, really helpful when I first started to use GIMP, I haven't been on the site for awhile though, I should go check it out again....
There's a search button up the top right hand corner of the site, search for what ever you want to do and there should be a tutorial for it, the problem is writing the write stuff to get what you want....if that makes sense...

http://www.minitokyo.net/ - Has a fair bit of Squaresoft stuff on it like Vargrant Story and quite a good selection of Final Fantasy stuff. Its half official half fan art so it has a pretty good selection for some games.

http://gallery.aethereality.net/ - has a pretty massive database of (mostly japanese only) Anime and Manga with a few games in there (like Megaman and Neon Genesis) but its frustration to navigate.

http://www.cdcovers.cc/ - for templates and stuff like that although finding full size stuff and quality scans can be a little enduring at times (depending on your search criteria).

If you use a p2p program like eMule you can get a fair bit of stuff of it too. Search for game names or books names (like "the Art of Final Fantasy IX", "Club Akira" etc), instruction booklets from other countries/languages, play guides etc. and you can find some really unique artwork found no where else on the net.

http://www.vgmuseum.com/ - good for looking at boxes from different countries, platforms etc. Not full size but clear and easy to distinguish. Good for those who make their own templates.

Finally (and the one i'm gonna regret telling the most) we have http://brandsoftheworld.com/ - massive logo resource site. Mostly concerned with major company logos (Nintendo, Sega etc) but contains some developer (SquareEnix, Capcom etc) logos and even the occasional game logo (Final Fantasy, Street Fighter etc).
--------THEY HAVE ALL ESRB LOGOS THERE IN ONE DOWN LOADABLE PAGE!!!!!-(keyword:ESRB)-----------------
All logos are vectored and come in either .eps or .ai formats with some in other print extensions so I highly recommend this site to anyone whos uses Photoshop. Simple to use search engine on site. Just remember that majority of these logos are copyright so use them at your own will and don't blame me if you get in shit.

http://www.eoinstanley.com/nintendo/logos.htm - Nintendo logos from the good 'ole Super NES to the Famicom Disk System (text type and disk logo) to the Virtual Boy (i think). Just be sure to credit the site and/or artist (considering i'm pretty sure he traced them!)

Anyway, hopefully these will help. Sorry for the long (and frequently changed) post but there is some good recourses in there so enjoy.

I don't think you really caught what I was throwing.

My problem wasn't with someone who doesn't want to take part in this thread, it's with people who go out of their way to keep their source material websites a secret. The site isn't about competition, and yet little shits like that still horde this stuff to themselves in order to foil their imaginary "opponents."

Imagine Golem from Lord of the Rings, except with source material, rather than a ring, and except nobody really cares about their "super secret awesome website with pictures of Samus," but they still hold it close to their chest, clenching for dear life, as if they have no talent or skill what-so-ever, and those high-resolution images is going to get them into the Hall of Fame, and finally, just finally, someone will like them, or give them a little attention.

That summarizes pretty well how I imagine someone that would hold stuff like that hostage to be.

xIAMHUNTERx
03-02-2008, 11:21 AM
No one's really "going out of their way" to keep their materials to themselves, they're just not putting them out there for everyone to use.

And if no one cares about the materials they have, it shouldn't matter then, should it?

guys, now your not even posting secret sites your posting the results you get on google as soon as you search gimp, or nintendo, etc.

Not posting secret sites? Just Google results? Are you reffering to me cos i resent that (And so will some others i think)! The sites i have listed can help an artist greatly depending on what they're after.

How the f**k do you think people find shit on the web? They just happen to end up there? No, they use Google. The only difference here is i used Google several months ago and entered a decent search criteria and spent days trawling through sites until i found these. Its not the first thing to come up on Google. Like others, I've spent a good deal of time looking for some of these, painstakingly looking through site after site just so i can put the names in a thread like this for people like you (who dis it anyway). My usual approach is "do it yourself" but this time i relented and decided to help others. Perhaps next time i'll think it through a little more thoroughly.

Besides, i don't see any of your "secret" sites here.

Fuck is more offensive than shit where i live (in my country anyway). Well, not really but others maybe offended by that word more than shit so thats why i do it. I also thought writing fuck got your post removed but apparently not so i'll start wrtiting it from now on.

Koopa - That's he's opinion i guess but telling me my sites are from the first lost Google search results - thats balls mate, i put a lot of effort into finding decent resource sites (like many others). Anyone who has added to this thread should get pissed with that comment!

It's only a bad idea if they don't credit artist etc. Overall, i think it should hopefully improve the quality and competitive aspect of this site. Oh, let me know how people find the logo site (just curious to see if others find it as helpful as i did).

lol haven't been around for a while, been doing stuff.. anyways.. it wonders me why this site still isn't in here:

www.animerender.com .... its a community with a VERY LARGE gallery
Although you have to have 25 posts to access the gallery, theres a "free" forum around but youll have to actually browse it without thumbnails... and game renders are free there i think..

Anyways, its a great community only i think it loads a bit too slow (random header/+10 forum mods i think, and such, anyways.. if you think they have good stuff you can always use paypal to gain access to their gallery!

Have fun this is a great site

PS. I use planetrenders for all non-anime its the 2nd best render site i know!

Wrong Side of the Art
It's full of posters at a fairly high resolution. Sci-fi, horror, exploitation from the 40s,50s,70s,80s etc. Worth checking to find material for DVD/BD artwork, or if you simply enjoy this stuff.

Don't just do it because you're bored, but because you really have a great design idea. With that, I present the links

I'm not sure if this has been posted, but this is a great place to get templates. They have just about any template you can think of, all downloads are PSD.

Dunno if this counts, but there's tihs guy on the web who made models of most if not all the maps in super mario galaxy, and they make great renders.

Here's the link: http://develteam.com/Garmichael/index.php?view=10

I don't know if I would use those because of the copyright, but they are really good!

Glad to help Brett. Just the fact that you and Radioactive Bob didn't know about these sites lets me know I did the right thing.

I added in a small review of each site, and also included the sites posted by LK and Guitarman in the main post. That should keep things neatly organized.

I'm pretty sure everyone knows this, but MarioWiki has an incredible artwork section, pretty much the highest reoloution Mario art, almost always rendered.

Definitly, every game article also has a rendered logo.

A while ago I started an art collection site for Pokemon, and soon am expanding it to other franchises: PidgiWiki (http://www.pidgi.net/wiki/). Any image found on PidgiWiki is the best quality around; I make sure of that. :P I've even come into the issue that some images are too big... heh... dunno how to make those work.

But yeah. There's artwork there straight from Nintendo themselves, no middleman at all.

Thanks for all the links. I didn't know some of them. Will come in handy, for sure.
On the other hand, I've been scanning game covers since 2004 from the games I own in my collection. Head over to www.gamescanner.org (http://www.gamescanner.org) and see if you can find something useful.
Some of you probably know my site and this is old news, but I though I'd pitch in...
