ok, heres an easy way to get a good microsoft games logo, go to wikipedia, and save the one off there lol. im not too familiar with layer masks but color to alpha doesn't work so well. to cut out something more easily, add a new alpha layer and then use the magic wand tool to delete the selected area. hope tht helped:cool:

FIRSTLY, look at my reply to "Need Help Cuting" for info on layer-mask.
As you want a logo of "Microsoft Game Studios"... the best is to grab it from
www.brandsoftheworld.com
(Use search on the left)
It will be a eps file (vector) so it will be highly detailed and smooth. UNFORTUNATELY, Gimp doesn't like eps files -- so you need to convert it to a bitmap. To do so, download Ghostscript...
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1897
select the "gs854w32.exe" -- I assume you are using Windows :)
Once downloaded, install... then copy the file "gswin32c.exe" to the bin directory of Gimp. In my case it's C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin
Now, load up GIMP and load the eps file, and a box will appear asking you how you wish the converted eps file to look. It's best to have smoothed out and say 300dpi. When you click okay, the Big Microsoft logo will be loaded!
You can then select the fuzzy selection tool... right click on image, choose "SELECT" --> "BY COLOUR" and click on white area to select all the white. Now either delete, or add a layer mask.
OH... As mentioned in other post... I've only used GIMP for a hour or so.... as I'm strictly a Photoshop freak... used it ever since it appeared on the PC eons a go --- or Deluxe Paint on Amiga and Degas Elite on ST! LOL
