Alright, I've been wanting to start one for quite some time, but I decided to hold off until I learn (and I'm still learning) considerable skills in graphics design. That said, I've noticed quite alot of unanswered/ignored requests from artists from various rankings so I decided to do something about it.
This thread is where artists can share various tips, tricks, and other graphic design secrets (if they want to) with each other. All artists of every skill level are welcome on a first come, first serve basis. Feel free to ask me and fellow artists questions relating to boxarts and designing. Every graphic design element will also be present in this thread as an available resource: character/logo renders, esrb/dev logos, templates, fonts, styles, brushes and even tutorials and custom logos (although those take some time, I'll see what I can do)
However, I do not intend for this thread to compete with the larger resource threads/shops that already exists. By all means check there first and consider this thread as your "last resort" thread when it comes to materials if nothing else. Any question relevant to graphics is accepted though questions about an artist's personal secrets/style won't always be answered. For example you could ask for a pic, and I'd send it to you, but I won't necesarily give the source I got it from and that works the same for asking for an element in a box and receiving perhaps only the original pic to work with.
Concerning the "no credit necessary" rule. I strongly encourage users to follow up with the giving artist's demand for credit so as not to spark tensions in the thread. If nothing else, P.M.'s are always good if you do not wish to give it to everyone else. Ofcourse, feel free to ask other artists in the thread and not only me (I'm not here all the time) and in that case feel free to p.m. me as well :)
Personally, I'll be randomly updating this thread on a daily or weekly or monthly basis (like I said: randomly), but I want this thread to mainly be driven by requests and discussions by artists alike. Cheers!

I am so sorry. Myb, I've realized that it really was choppy XD. I've just removed it and to compensate I'll be providing my upcoming zelda kit :)
Random Tip #2: using guides/rulers greatly helps when aligning templates/screenshots/dev and esrb logos. Unless ofcourse, you trust your eyes that well enough ;P
regardless, yes. I mainly do photoshop and illustrator and am not as well versed in gimp. Btw, expect a workable .psd gamecube (or should I say kit?) temp coming out soon with the advent of my next box...jejeje

Alright, this is the first part to my zelda kit and actually the biggest one as well. The gamecube template that I used for my Zelda box :)
Version Alpha is a .png Gamecube temp modeled with the same dimensions from my Zelda box complete with space for background and sig as in the original. Please save as .png for transparency. I DO NOT require credit for this, however with the caveat that YOU put the temp into good use :)Enjoy ;)
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/LKGamecubeTemp.png
However, for the more avid boxartists and those that use photoshop,
Version Twilight is an enhanced version of the Alpha version complete with a customizable workspace, bw gradient background, and ersb/game info/dev logos as seen in my Twilight Princess box, hence version Twilight. All customizable in .psd format :) However, the one here is in .png and only a sample and I require that you pm me for it, because I'm not giving it out to everyone. Credit is not necessary but encouraged for using Version Twilight ;)

I'm not jealous. I've never even made a gamecube box, and my Wii template is the best on the site. I don't have anything to be jealous of. I was just stating that the "kits" seemed a bit over the top. It is a nice template, I just think it should be accessible to everyone.

And i'm currently working on a ps2 template that'll be pretty hi-res and nice.

it is accesible for everyone, even Version Twilight. However, that particular one is in .psd format and if you have photoshop, then just pm me and I'll gladly give it :)
For the rest of the kit, it's available to everyone even non-photoshop users, Ver Twilight is the only thing in the kit that requires photoshop and is accesible to anyone who owns the program.

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/TwilightLogox.png
Twilight Princess Logo (Glow):
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/TwilightLogoGlowx.png
This is the background I created off the official front (which took quite a while to get it right) and I used it as the background for the back of my zelda box. Very nice piece of material to use whether for blending or background or anything in between :)
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/TwilightBackground.png
And finally, the best part in the kit in my opinion, because of the sole fact that it was a pain in the ass to render off the official back and took me forever to finalize. The screenborders! is also versatile in that it could be used for most zelda boxes out there. pls credit if you use and thanks.
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/TwilightBordersx.png
Right click and save as .png on any part of the kit for transparency. Phew...I'm done. Enjoy peeps ;)

well, after reading through just the first page of this, I've decided that I cam offer a bunch about graphic design and stuff like that, because I've taken actual courses on them! I wont give program specific tips to narrow it down, just things like:
Kirbylore tip #1: too many cooks spoil the soup, as well as too many pictures can ruin the front page of a box. instead of filling the space with a lot of small images, use a large image and a fitting background. Having trouble finding these? Try going to google image search and typing in various searches that relate to what your trying to find. So you could put; legend of zelda background, or just legend of zelda, or even hyrule background. Typing in different searches like that in the image search will get you a very vast number of images to work with, and if you want to be specific to size, there is a drop down option of extra large, large, medium and small images. I recomend using only images that you find in large or extra large, but in some cases you can use a medium image, such as screenshots for the back of the box, etc. Good luck!
this one is for photoshop only:
Kirbylore tip #2: Making titles from scratch can be difficult, but very necesary for creating an imaginary game. A tip that I recomend using is to make text, with a fitting font of course, and use an outer glow on it with large spread (remember to eyeball it based on how the image looks) and 100% opacity. When you finish this, duplicate the layer and go to the blending options on the new layer. Change the color on the outer glow, and increase the size. This will create a text with two borders on it. when you are happy with it, I also recomend using the warped text function, although that could look a little cheesy if used too much, it is an effecting tool none-the-less. Play with color and shape a lot when making your own titles. Good luck :)

That's your own choice, i find it easier to just type a small credit part underneath the box or so, but whatever pleases you works best.

P.S. An editorial and tutorial are coming up soon! As well as a very cool looking background. :D

*Notice*: Though this editorial is geared towards accomplished and veteran boxartists, it by no means cannot be helpful to an amateur/newb designer. On the contrary, knowing these principles and keeping them in mind during the design process will immensely help any artist of any skill level to develop their technique and style and thus improve and define themselves as artists.
The following editorial, however, will assume that the said artist has a reasonable amount of skill in making boxarts and has a firm grasp on technique. This first part will not go in depth with technique, which is basically how well the boxart is made in terms of errors in placing, quality and what not.
Technique is basic though, what makes your boxart truly yours and what makes others appreciate your work is none other than your own style. That said, I strongly encourage everyone who is interested to read the following and stay tuned for more coming up. Let us begin.
LK Editorials | Advance Design Principles - Part 1: Color Emotion
Before talking about color, let's talk about what happens when the designer looks at his boxart presentation. If it was a familiar game that he has played, whether he loved or loathed it, it will bring back memories of the game itself and the feelings that the said designer had when he/she last played the game. Though quite different, the same can be said about an artist who makes a boxart without playing the game. Just looking at the art-style of the materials will give the designer a feel of how the game is.
So what happens when the viewer looks at the boxart presentation? Will he/she share the same memories or emotions that the designer had while looking at the final piece? Will they share the same feelings as the artist even if they played the game before?
Most likely not.
But that's exactly how successful artists make their boxes. They must present their boxes in a way that it shares the emotion and passion that they felt during the design process. Those same artists establish a "connection" with the viewer. (Be mature here guys) And thus, to some degree the viewer can appreciate the work.
Color is one of the ways that the artist communicates to the viewer. Color conveys meaning and emotion to the viewer, and influences him/her in both a mental and physical level. Thus it's wholly important to have a firm grasp on color when it comes to design. You're probably thinking "duh! Of course color is important! My boxes all have a unique/cool/awesome color schemes yadiyadiyada" Having an awesome color scheme is not enough, however. As the artist, you control what meanings and emotions you want to convey through color.
For example, the boxart for the game "Assasin's Creed" has a bluish-white scheme with silver/gray and red as secondary ones. Now all together, blue lends a feeling of calmness and soothness while white can illustrate purity. Silver and gray give a solid sophisticated feel to it while the red on white gives a sense to the viewer that the purity is thus destroyed by the killing factor/blood symbolized by the red color.
Average artists will project the main themes of the games they design for to the viewer by having a main color scheme. Successful artists, however, control what they want the viewer to feel exactly through the color in their pieces. They can add on colors that they think will enhance the feel of the box's presentation. They can also omit colors that they think is partial and can only detract from the main feel of the game. Not only do they do it in way of colors but also of symbols. As the artist, YOU control your piece and thus how you want your viewers to feel when viewing your boxart through color; not the other way around.
Until next time,
-LK
P.S. If anyone is interested with editorials on basic design principles ask in the thread or pm me, and that works also for any respectable artists willing to write editorials about the basic/advance principles, if you are interested say so in the thread or pm me and I'll put you on staff ;)
Update: I've also put a directory segment on the first comment on the first page. To serve as a directory for the major thread updates, so people can quickly know where to go to for their specific needs.

Great job LK, that helped me alot.
i personally recognise the fact that artists can change the feeling and tone of the box by means of colour-editing. i recently started doing that as well.[see timeshift box :P]

LK's Partial Image Continuation Tutorial
This is a tutorial that explains how to get the image continuation effect through other graphic elements such as screenshots, logos, other characters etc, while still looking professional. It's a very handy technique to know and can actually make a great difference in the entire box presentation.
While this tutorial is geared towards photoshop users, I think the concept is more or less the same and can be applied to both Gimp and other graphic manipulation programs out there. To those that already know how to do this, I encourage you to help out others that are having problems with it as well as start employing it more often in your creations if you haven't done so yet.
To those, however, that have wondered, but still don't know, those who are wondering and those who will wonder how to achieve this effect, read on ;)
Step1: Simply set the layer you wish to partially continue, beneath the layer it's suppose to go through. It should look something like this:
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/Tutorial1.png
Step 2: Take the upper layer and decrease it's opacity to about 25% or until you can see part of the bottom layer you wish to continue visibly. It should look something like this:
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/Tutorial2.png
Step 3: Still in the upper layer, use the eraser tool (with a soft-edged brush for best results) to erase part of the upper layer that intersects with the part of the bottom layer that you wish to continue. It should look something like this:
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/Tutorial3.png
Step 4: Finally, just set the opacity of the upper layer back to 100% . Your final product should looks something like this:
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/Tutorial4.png
Congratulations, you've just learned how to pull off a successful partial image continuation. A very handy technique. Cheers and good luck on your future projects ;)

well LK, that's an interesting technique. I prefer selecting th part that is overlapping (leon's hand/knife) and cut with ctrl/x and paste with ctrl/v. then move the new layer above the other pic (the line of screenshots) and then move his hand back in place. this is a lot smoother for people without LK like reflexes :P I'd like to join the team btw. I'll work on some kinda tutorial w/ pics tonight! :D

ok, here comes a tutorial I've been working on :D
Kirbylore
12-25-2007, 10:54 PM
Well, welcome to Kirbylore's tutorials part 1, Today we'll be going over the mastery of image blending/safe editing. ooooOOOOoooohhh. ok, so let's begin:
Let's start with an image of a triforce. In this tutorial, I'll be making a Legend of Zelda motif, just for your information :P
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step1.png
Lets now place the picture that we want on it on by one... let's not worry about cutting them out yet. we'll get to that bridge when we come to it :)Also to lower the opacity to about 63% on each one. Notice when I lower the opacity on every one, you can kind of see about the boundaries we are going to use.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step2.png
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step3.png
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step4.png
Alright, now lower the opacity on this last one, and it should look somethin like this:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step5.png
Ok, so now get the opacity all the way back to 90% on one of them. You're choice, It's a little irrelevant for this tutorial, so I'll go with link on the top. You know what? Link seems kind of small huh? let's make him a bit larger :)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step6.png
more to be continued.......
Kirbylore
12-25-2007, 10:55 PM
Alrighty then.... here comes the REALLY important part. It's pretty much the heart and soul of this tutorial :) go into the layers palette, and click this icon while highlighting the layer that we just brought up to 90%.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step7.png
Ignore the blurred out part, I got this pic online, and I don't want to get into trouble :O
Clicking this will enable a layer mask, which will allow you to erase parts of the image with the paint brush tool, and then if I make a mistkae, I can color in the part that I accidently erased with the eraser tool. Nifty huh? well, this tool also does other cool things, like advanced image blending. ooooOOOOooohhh!!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step8.png
so by selecting the gradient tool, you can blend images really easy! just make sure your gradient color is plain black to white. now gradienting your image, click on the part you want erased, and pull towards the point that you want it blended.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step9.png
This definetly takes a lot of playing around with. The more you use it, the more you'll understand it, so that's always a reason to fiddle around with tools like that. Anyway, that is what I got. Still doesn't look like much now, but lets put a nice background around it :O
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/finalstep10.png
Well, there you have it. something new to fiddle around with :D sorry my final product wasn't that amazing, but it might just solve a problem you've been having :D anyone? nobody???? :P jk, hope this helped you, ask any questions about it, I'll be glad to help :D

First of all, awesome job Kirbylore. We appreciate your invaluable contribution to the thread. Thanks.
This is the final part of my holiday update, I know it's kinda late, but I was quite busy during christmas and my birthday (25th and 26th respectively) And I'm hoping that ppl don't just skip to this last part , because it's a material and the other two were an editorial and a tutorial. By all means, I think the first two are much more important than this, so if you haven't seen them, I highly encourage to do so now.
As for this piece of design material, the midnight grunge. Lots of time, effort (and layers) went into this. It took me a while to get it right. Once again, this is one of those material that is flexible design wise in that you can use it as a boxart background, wallpaper, blending, grunge texture..etc etc. enjoy ;)

The Template | Extinction
The definitive .png version of my gcn temp complete with side glows and dev/esrb logos and back game info as modeled after my re4 box + some extra stuff.

The Logo | Apocalypse
An enhanced resident evil 4 logo that I used; complete with a dark outer glow to blend perfectly with a nice dark background :)
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/Apocalypse.png
The Background | Degeneration
A great grunged background that could be used not only for any resident evil boxes, but most survival horror games in general. As always, this one's a flexible design material in that it could be used as a background, texture, blending or anything in between.
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/Ladykiller_photo/Degeneration.png
The Film Strip | Hazard
Why is it that the last part always seems the smallest, but ends up being the coolest material in the kit? I may never know....
Anyway, this is a grunged film strip that I used as a screenshot border. A very fine piece of design material if I do say so myself. (straightens collar*)

#1, Personalize the cover art, not the template.
I used to break this rule in subtle ways and regret it, looking back. For example, on the 2003-ish covers for some GameCube custom covers I did, I'd add in little disclaimers about how the game would only play on an NTSC console, which Nintendo of America never did themselves. Why? Probably just the urge to personalize. You're only changing the artwork, not the cover template. Continuing with this theme, if you're so proud of your work that you feel the need to add your name somewhere, my best advice is - don't. Again, I used to be guilty of this. If you're going to do it, make it extremely subtle and hide it in a product code or in the background, like an artist would do with their signature.
#2, It has to be high resolution.
Although I personally only look at covers on my screen, if someone's going to print them, then they need all the resolution they can to avoid looking like a pixellated mess.
#3, Everything MUST be in proportion!
Often, you see covers where something just doesn't look right, but you can't immediately see why - then you notice a small detail that's been squashed and is too tall and thin, like an ESRB or Company logo, for example. When you're resizing elements, always hold down the SHIFT key in your graphics program. This will lock the proportions and make sure that everything you resize is done correctly. For all my old cover designing crimes, I was never guilty of this, because it's incredibly simple. Here's an example I whipped up specially for this article, though:
http://www.lyris-lite.net/summer_scapes/feature_covertips/squash.png
Speaking of proportion - if you use a font, I'd recommend that you keep the text in the same proportions every time you use it. In other words, don't use one font for the entire back cover, and then randomly use a narrower version of it, like I did for the text at the bottom right of my Shenmue DVD back cover. The real reason I did this was because the text was squashed in at the last minute - and it shows. This is too much text, crammed into too small a space.
http://www.lyris-lite.net/summer_scapes/feature_covertips/squashtext.jpg
#4, Give everything room to breathe.
Don't place elements too close to each other or too close to the edges. This is bad composition and looks incredibly strange, although I'd need a professional designer to tell me the psychological reasoning behind this. Give all the elements on your cover plenty of padding space.
http://www.lyris-lite.net/summer_scapes/feature_covertips/padding.jpg
#5, No leftover placeholder text!
If you're working from a template, make sure everything's been filled in! I've seen some covers that are actually based off the templates I made, where the cover creators haven't finished the job, meaning that "PUBLISHER ADDRESS GOES HERE" and "PRODUCT CODE XXXXXXXXXXXX" are visible on the end result. Sloppy!
#6, Work from high-res art.
Look around the web at wallpaper sites and use Google Image (http://image.google.com/) to look for good quality pictures. Do this until you find the best quality images possible! Our custom covers are almost never going to look as good when it comes to this kind of quality compared to the publishers themselves (even if they can be better over all), so we need to use the best quality pictures we can get as a starting point. Don't limit yourself to English-language sites! If the game you're covering is from Japan, go to the Japanese developer's site and dig around and see if you can find some good quality pictures there. Often these sites have cool wallpaper images you can use, that don't make their way over to the US or UK sites. As a last resort, scan images to use. Especially on consumer (i.e. non-expensive) scanners, the results will be far from perfect when compared to images that have never left the digital domain, but it's still possible to get good results.
#7, Divide the back cover up into obvious zones.
Don't just get some back cover text and cram it onto the back cover in any way imaginable. To make the cover read nicely, it's a good idea to break it up into clearly defined zones. For example, if we were to draw borders around our imaginary zones, we'd get this:
http://www.lyris-lite.net/summer_scapes/feature_covertips/menandguns_bad.gif
http://www.lyris-lite.net/summer_scapes/feature_covertips/menandguns_good.gif
See how the image on the right is a little easier to follow? It's neater and cleaner, whereas the text on the picture on the left flows haphazardly around the inserted pictures.
#8, Make sure colors "go" together!
This is a difficult one to explain, because there are loads of web sites out there explaining color Theory. You don't need to have watched too many home decoration TV shows to know that some colors work well together, and others don't. Just keep expirementing until you get a good mix of colors that don't burn out the viewer's eyes!
The golden rule: If a professional company wouldn't do it, you shouldn't do it either.
OK, so that may not be the best example - professional companies, after all, are the people who produced the covers we want to replace in the first place! But even if we don't always like their work, these companies DO follow coherent design rules. Use your head, and if necessary, look back to the official cover that you're replacing to see what parts work from it, and what ones don't.
I hope these tips will help you! Take this advice wisely. These are all the steps into making a good box art.;)
Thanks Chibi! I don't think i'm only one who thinks those tips are useful :)

Thanks LK. I'm gonna make a RE4 box now, thanks to you :D
EDIT: BTW, i can't open that Extinction template properly with my Photoshop Elements, it whines something about color depths and if i choose yes it opens it and it looks horrible.
Hmmm....I somehow saw that when I opened it via elements. However, with photoshop and imageready it should be just fine.
I did, however, took the time to enhance it and did what I can concerning the color depths issue. Hope it's better now.
And very nice job Chibi Cloud, tnx for the contribution, that helped out alot ;)

Some GIMP Tips From MugglesMan111
1. When in doubt for a snappy backround, use the gradient tool
2. Don't be afraid to experiment with brushes, even download some random ones, you nevewr know, you might like the result.
3. The drop-shadow is your friend. when you can't put that certain touch on a logo or tagline, a drop shadow or sunburst can spice it up.
4. Skewing works great for quotes, as well as screenshots.
5. Try using the burn and blend tools. it can put a dimming into an image that will mak it look pretty good.
6. When resizing images, you may not always get the size you want, so maybe try making both parts one image to get it just right.
Okay, there you go

Well, here's my New Year's Update guys.
My Resident Evil Kit, much time and effort went into these materials so please give credit if you're gonna use them. Enjoy ;)
P.S. The file/codenames are there for distinction from other materials, but also mainly just for fun and they sound cool...so myeahhh :P
The Template | Extinction
The definitive .png version of my gcn temp complete with side glows and dev/esrb logos and back game info as modeled after my re4 box + some extra stuff.
[

Ok, so i decided to make a wallpaper myself.
Good luck !
oh, and the right part of the picture is for when you lose a color, and so you can look back at the changes.
start with a light-brown coloured background.
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa224/ayr0n/1.png
After that, grab the burntool, and follow the settings i used in the following picture.
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa224/ayr0n/tut2.png
start randomly brushing on the background, make sure it looks a bit authentic, so don't go drawing any smileys or anything ;). Big large strokes with a soft-edged brush work the best.
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa224/ayr0n/tut3.png
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa224/ayr0n/tut4.png
change to these settings: http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa224/ayr0n/tut5.png
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa224/ayr0n/tut6.png
grab a grungy background, like this one:http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/42/computerachtergrond2sx.gif

Welcome to my third tutorial.
i made the pictures about 20 minutes ago, and my second sample has a small part of my first sample, because i used only one palette.
Using the healing brush tool may be tricky at times, but is highly helpful when deleting parts of an image, and masking it to look good.
With the healing brush tool, you will have to define a point of 'brushing', which will be explained soon.
I hope you have fun trying this, and ofcourse, as all my tutorials are, this one's made for and in Photoshop.
Good luck Heal-brushing ;).

Welcome to my latest tutorial.
This one's pretty simple and basic, but i still had the feeling you guys might want it.
These are the basics of gradient overlaying, something i personally use alot, to enhance the feel of the game, or the feel of creating the box, in a way Ladykiller described perfectly a couple of pages ago.
Please consider the amount of time and effort put into this, and also consider the fact i made it for the community. No flaming or insulting please.
Without further ado, i wish you good luck, and i hope that this could help you.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/bannerkirbylore2.png
Ok, welcome to Kirbylore’s tutorials part 2!!! Weeewww!! Today, we’ll be learning about word placement and organization. We’ll also cover titles and general cutting/rendering. So let’s get started with an example from one of my boxes of old. Kirbylore Air Ride 2, my second box art:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/KirbyAirRide2.jpg
Yeesh…. Now let’s zoom in on the back there, ok here we go.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/KirbyAirRide2back.png
Ok, so there’s a lot that I want to point out about what’s wrong with the back here. I got a lot of empty replies saying the back looked funny, so let’s analyze it now, OK? Alright, so here’s our first point of interest, the text! I’ve circled the top bit of text, so let’s talk about that.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step3kirby.png
Although this might look like an alright text for the style of the game, a lot of non cartoony games use fonts like Arial. But anyway, here’s some tricks that I found useful for making text pop out.
outer glows
--well, if you make your way on over to the layers palette, double click on the text layer, and you should have something called blending options popped up. Now you will find outer glow on the list there on the left, but don’t just click the check box, click the button with the words ‘outer glow’ on it. You should see this:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step4kirby.png
Ok, so putting about these settings, (the size and spread switches you should toggle around with, that’s why I blurred out the numbers) will create a fully customizable outline of your title/text. You shouldn’t use this technique on EVERYTHING, but I suggest using it if it is hard to see some text on your back, or the title is hard to see. Playing around with it, it will come out something like this:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step5kirby.png
Use backgrounds that fit your text.
--Plan out what you want, don’t just create on a whim. Well, creating on a whim is ok, but don’t post your results unless it turned out good. To really tell if your work is ok, post it on the critique threads under ‘forums’. Anyway, if you have a very dark text, use white text with an outer glow of a color that matches, or maybe even just the white, if it’s easy to read. Always check your work and look at it carefully before posting. Always!!!!
Drop Shadows
--although this may be a little cheesy at times, it works in plenty of situations. Under blending options again, you’ll see drop shadow as the first button on the left bar. Click the words, and play around with all the settings until you know pretty much how everything works. I would show you, but I don’t have a picture of that screen :o so here’s an example on what it looks like:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step6kirby.png
Ok, so that’s enough for text I think, lets talk about text placing and overall design of the back of a box.
Kirbylore
01-06-2008, 03:35 PM
Typography
--This is more of an eye and an art than skill, but I’ll teach you the ropes anyway. Well, when placing text on a back, front, or pretty much anywhere, you want to have a flow on your text, and emphasis on important words. How do you do this you ask? Well here it is:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step7kirby.png
-- This is better, but it needs work, and isn’t the best text I could show you for an understanding. Here are a couple more examples with the same frame of mind J.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step8kirby.png
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step9kirby.png
Back Design and Placement
-- well, the back of a box might be the most difficult thing when making a box, but we’ll muscle through it :P ok, so when making a back, first of all you need to know a couple things. Your text should always be readable from a short distance. Get someone in your house to come and see if it is legible, as well as if it has any spelling errors. Making it legible can be found by exploring the first part of this tutorial :D. Secondly, you need screenshots (most of the time) and the need to be both the same size and shape, as well as be in relative design with each other. For example, Lady Killer just put up a Resident Evil kit, that includes a film reel to put screenshots in. That is a very good idea. Now I will show you a different way to do it, through a tutorial on how to make a back in general.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step10kirby.png
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step11kirby.png
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step12kirby.png
These past three shots were a little tutorial of making a back from a template and some pictures that I found on google. So anyways, I stopped here because I wanted to show you how different styles of text are needed for different situations. This part should be fairly simple. Firstly, if you have screenshots that aren’t accompanied by line borders or the film reel that I mentioned above, you probably should have text underneath or on top of them. Like this:

Here is a couple of other ways you can do it shown through some of my other boxes.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step15kirby.png
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step16kirby.png
Ok, so back to the back that we’re making, all it needs is another element to the left of it right? Ok so let’s put one there :D we’ll find a meta knight and cut it out and place it there nicely.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step17kirby.png
Logos and General Rendering/Cutting
-- Well, this is a very hard subject…. Cutting… wow. So anyways, let’s start with logos :P. When you have a logo, you need to cut it out and place it accordingly, and since I’m chickening out for the moment on the idea of a cutting tutorial, let’s start with placement and sizing.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step18kirby.png
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step19kirby.png

General Rendering
-- well cutting things out is referred to as rendering things. Cutting out a logo, or a character, or a dev logo is all needed to make a good box art. This can be a tricky skill, and requires some what of a steady hand and an eye for correctness. Let’s start by cutting out a simple logo.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step21kirby.png
But wait! There are still weird circles around the logo and it’s poorly cut out around the sides of the logo! Don’t stop there! I’ll show you how to move on!!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/kirbylore/step22kirby.png
Ok, wow, I think that’s about it. Be sure to always experiment with things before you try and use it in a box art. That’s all for now folks! See ya around!

It's the overall wow-ness factor that matters most for backs imo

This is part 1 of about 5, i know the PS3 Temp isn't not that good but i'm kinda working on it.
Credit will be appreciated but not required.
