I think there are already some tutorials around for GIMP, aren't there? On this site, too.

Gimptalk.com: There are alot of tutorials there for lots of things to do with GIMP, but most of its about sigs and things, but you can still use the tutorials for boxes.....just look around the whole website for a while, you gradually get use to it then it's easy to find stuff.
