How do you get a picture to fade on the edge with either paint or gimp?

Also, to give a picture a black and white pixel colour should I save it as a monchrome?

You can't fade pictures with paint... I don't have Gimp. But photoshop!

What's the most recent version of photoshop? I think I have a photoshop install cd but I have no clue what the version is?
