Lodo, while you are choosing my box please do not consider the super mario galaxy box as it was a satire box which I created in 5 minutes compared to my other boxes on which I've worked for a lot longer.

I also feel that as newcomers we should be allowed to choose our box like old schoolers since by the end of the competition you may/or may not be at our early boxes which would be worse than our latest. Sure we are allowed to update, but I still would prefer choosing which box to submit for the competition.

I think it would. I've spend a lot of time on some boxes which I really wanted to turn out good. Sure there is a standard quality everyone puts upon which we furthur add - and on some I've put double of that and in some I've put Quadruple. It shouldn't be expected that all progressive boxes have to be better - there is a progressive gradual improvement pattern - but there are some highs and lows.

For examples sake, the design of my mario galaxy box is purposely bad and unsightful - so its obviously more unattactive than my previous efforts. On the other hand my starcraft 2 box was made with a lot of care and attention and I felt that instead could be used in such a competition.

So I'd like to choose which boxes I want to submit against a certain competitor.

As for competitors, I think it seems fair enough to me. The newcomer thing is based on when you joined this site. Of course that doesn't have to do with when you started graphic designing - and I've been into graphic designing for a lot longer. The skills of a boxartist are based on their experience of graphic designing, not how long they've been around on this site.

no, you're right, but the effort put into a box doesn't have to differ between artists, when an artist like ff22 or vengeance puts as much effort into a box as i have, it's likely that their boxes would turn out better, because they have more , well, let's call it boxart experience. they know how to edit everything to make it look like they wanted to, and yes, the skills of a boxartist are basde on their experience of graphic designing, but for me, the join date of this site, and the start of graphic designing are the same, and still, if you have 1 year of graphic designing skills before you started making boxarts,and ff22 and vengeance also have 1 year skills before they started making boxarts, they would have lots and lots more experience.
also, the gradual improvement pattern you were talking about, it consists out of the constructive criticism given on this very site, which means, if you joined this site before the rest, they would have learned more from the comments given and have lots and lots of well-earned boxarting experience..
as for me, going against an 'veteran' of this site is unfair, since i've started graphic designing at my join date for vgboxart.

I don't get what the "lots more experience" is because after 1 or 2 boxes anyone who has an eye for graphic designing will learn how to place logos correctly and so on.

I admit that a boxartist has to focus on things like placement of text and images to make it look good - you may not encounter such things in pure graphic designing often but then it isn't something you can get the hang of particularly if you've been into graphic designing for long.

Look at Mad spike, for example. His first and second box may have not the right placement of text and images - but the quality of his work was very good right from the start. The site vets helped him out and 2 boxes later he produced very high calibur work that could pass as official boxart.

So I disagree with the fact that being a site vet has much to do with your experience in graphic designing. Quite a few newcomers are good from the start.

What I personally believe is unfair to pair up people who've had a lot of graphic design experience with those that have little. So I can understand why you feel uneasy with a competition with someone like FF22 and on the other hand someone like Hellknight wouldn't. I think there should be a "old school" and "new school" competition based on the skills not on the join date.

I know you probably don't want to change the matches, but at least give us the liberty to choose from our own boxes...and if I'm not wrong it only says "most recent box" for round 1. There are no rules for the second round that SJ created.

I honestly think that FF22 shouldn't even be in new school. He's been here since the end of 06 or something like that. Plus he's like the best box artist out there besides WickedGamer1. Do you really think thats new school? No. He should be in old school instead. But I can see that theres no more positions left. Oh well. Good luck Ayron.

well, this sucks, does ANYONE really think this is a fair competition? go lock old dog shoes please, this is unfair in it's purest form, FF22 is one of the [ if not THE] best boxartist on this site, and he is to compete against someone whose join date is may 2007 and had no experience with graphic designing before!
