First, good choice on geting GIMP.
Second, to get templates into GIMP, you need to first find one (front page of this site at the bottem right)
Then, save the template (or pic, they work the same way) to your desktop.
Finally, go into GIMP, and go to File, open as layer, and the pic will be imported into the program as it's own layer. It's all about how you want the temp. or pic to look afterwards.
