I will be hosting the VGBA Summer 2007 Boxart Competition as planned. I promise it will begin next Friday, if you want to participate, keep an eye out for the thread and sign up ASAP.

If anyone has any ideas, telling me now would be great. The competition however will be based on what we're already familar with.

Sorry for double posting. Also Icarus_Flight can reserve a place without signing up, if he's interested, because I thought it was unfortunate that he couldn't enter the last competitions because there was little preparation for signing-up unlike now, so he deserves that privilege.

Also I'm considering a new idea; instead of the competitors being pitched against each other based on random chance, it will be based on skill. However this will not be biased, for instance if Bretska signs up, he will probably not go against me or let's say, Crayon_Man, for the first round, he will be chosen to go against someone more on his level. There's no way however this system can be 100% accurate so there's no need to take it personal. I just want to avoid annihilations which is discouraging.

Please tell me what you think.

it doesn't matter too much about level, last competition i beat WickedGamer1, and i'm way out of his league. but i still won.

i think i did pretty bad on the last two competitions, especially with that ES4:SI box, i would like to sign up for this one so i can do better. oh, and warn me if we have to do anything crazy like "World of WarCraft Burning Crusade Expansion Pack" because we already had to do two games with barely any material, i don't want to go through that again.

There are no real requirements for participating in the contest other than that you've been active here longer than a week, this is just to avoid trolls from joining. If the demand gets high enough I'll start the sign-up thread earlier rather than a week today.

I will not set challenging boxes because I do not want to take too much time of people's hands. I want to be as encouraging as I can, however winning is the real challenge. :)

1. A game with a made-up template (there are some already pre-made temps by koopadasher and others in the database)
2. a "threequel" to a game (basically like Jak 3, Metroid Prime 3, Prince of Persia 3, etc.)
3. A game of a specific genre (e.g. puzzle)
4. Your favourite game (not sure about this one but i would like it, unfortunately some people might just make a Halo 2 or something)
5. A box for a game that has not yet been made on the site
6. A game that recently just got confirmed (e.g. Rayman Raving Rabbids 2)
7. A game made by a specific developer
8. A game that you have never played (not so sure)
9. Your least favourite game (see no. 4)
10. A game that is rated E (nstc) or 3+ (pal).
11. A box in a different language (Icarus would be good at this)
12. A movie boxart (?)
13. A game soundtrack

I am pure PC player. Honesly, I do not want, that in my portfolio there was something that is not pleasant to me. For example, DBZ as game or a cartoon is means nothing for me (saw pair series of a cartoon and that's it). All arts are in cartoon style. I just don't want to work above these projects:) As I sad earlier - it's like GTA3 boxes - all the same :)
If there was a list of games for competition - would be superb:)
And to participate I wish what to win, and it is simple, probably for the sake of discipline. For example, I sit down to do a box for STALKER, something does not leave also I cease to work, as there is no fuse. But competition would force me to finish what I begin:)

You know. Games that has a good arts.
I know nothing about FF, MGS, DBZ, Sonic, Zelda, Mario and so on. And I think there is no good modern art for this games. Maybe cos they all out b4 1991? :D

If I do not know game, but this game has interesting arts I can become interested (for example, my boxes Death By Degrees, Ridge Racer 7, or even not yet released UT3, Crysis). I, for example, in Resident Evil did't play too (oops, I have finished RE4). But it is possible to dig out the art and a material on it, cos they have some. But if we talk about DBZ... I can't imagine how I shall search cartoon pics and cartoon arts. Crazy :D
I am not the worst artist on VGBoxart, but from all of the 7 categories I can take part only in one. Even because I am from Ukraine. I have grown on others TV Shows, Cartoons, did not look Wrestling and did not read Comics.

We speak about skills, a creative. Everyone shows it in what can (someone it is pleasant to do boxes about TV Shows, to whom that about Wrestling games, someone about comics, someone about PC games). Someone can make the best in the world box for DBZ, I can make the best in the world box for HL2. But I cannot make a good box for DBZ as well as that person cannot make a good box about HL2. And how to define who's from us is better?

I suggest to make in advance the list of all games which at the choice of organizers will be offered a battling pair. Then everyone can see to what games they are ready, about what they need to esteem still and download some pics.

I do not blame you. It is simply interesting to me, why in general are given on the task of game at which don't have any arts (as elder scrolls iv shivering isles - everyone know, that there is no normal arts). To blind from a shit a candy? You can't made a candy from such a shit, right? I understand, that that list from 7 items is a simple sentence and is approved by nobody. But why 6/7 items are games on motives of Comics, TV Shows, Wrestling, Sega Dreamcast, and old games comes out b4 1991?
Unless these games are something interesting? Yes these games are not known also by anybody! Someone can name good game on motives of TV Shows? I thought, that standards of the game industry are those games which I have written, instead of any Wrestling Games For Old Granny Dreamcast. I suggest then to divide into genres (FPS, TPS, RPG, Online, Sports, Racing, ETC), or on platforms (PC, PS3, X360).

In the competition I'm hosting, I think I will be choosing separate games, not just genres, for you to make boxes of, because this is suppose to be about competition. One of the things that makes it entertaining is seeing who can do the best job with the same game. If you are unfamiliar with the game, try researching it on Wikipedia. In the future when I give you the signal to make a box, I will give you six days for you to find your material and make something with it, rather than giving you a head start by naming games that may be involved in the competition. This is because I want things to be pretty simply organized.

Oh and this competition will just be about video game box arts, not movies or music. In fact I will try to avoid games people hate. The only prize I can think of is a winners' ceremony and of course bragging rights, not very good but please give me better suggestions, either way don't expect a cheque. :D

Can you make some list of them? For example.
Simply I grew on usual European and American PC games. FPS, TPS and so on. Read and read about them, I download video - has finished (passed) about 70% of all interesting and not so games. I watch releases, always at once I buy, etc. I am a great gamer and even a developer (little bit). And here most of VGBA users are fans of some old Dreamcast Mario and Zelda games. Such impression, that except for these games of anything also does not exist. These games - elite, and all rest - the second grade. How about good old Half-Life, Unreal, MDK and many others? Why does everyone wants to create a box to some 1980+ game? IMO, It is silly even because for these games arts is not present, what them to use (unless one in the low resolution) both works leave same and poor-quality.
Well all right. I do not wish to translate interesting dispute in demagogy what to not seem the vegetable. As in the answer I hear only reproaches, type: you do not want - it is not necessary. So let eat bee... Oh, Let it be ;)

For what what games will learn are offered by you, I have simply looked your profile what to look what games you carry away first of all. And here that I have counted: You made 64 boxes. 58 from them are games developed by the Japanese developers (Square Enix, Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, Sega and more). And only 6 boxes not the Japanese developers. 2 of them are made for Nintendo (WII). 90 % of all games are Japanese games. I don't want to say that the Japanese games bad or that they are worse American.
Them 90 % are simple. I think, that the parity to not change and at competitions. That is why I have begun this theme.
Also do not think, that I accuse you that you do many boxes for the Japanese games.
And even having looked the previous competitions, I have counted many Japanese games. The third competition begins on June, 1st and it will consist a lot of Japanese games too. And I have a question: And when there will be a competition for not the Japanese games? For games not for PS2 and Nintendo? It happens when competition will be organized by the person not enamoured in the Japanese games?
I would take part in such competition. I think, that all would accept in it participation. And it will be something new.

MGS and Zelda have no good arts. MGS4 at all has no any arts (maybe just concepts). Only screenshots unanimously green color. IMO
At us different sights at competition. I consider, that the works participating in competition should be a parameter of that, how much well it is possible to make a box. Instead of the one who will find the art to twenty years' old game in the best resolution.
Work-winner should be one of the best box on the site, instead of is simple the best among two. For achievement the best result it is necessary to use the best. It's like a sports of high achievements.
I so understand, that EG for the first time organizes competition. So there are no special reasons for it to not trust him. So, sorry, man.
I think, that I here not the first day and my boxes have deserved to myself a certain status. Therefore I think, you forgive to me mine paranoid and will not be so nervously to me to answer, ок? I not so often participate in disputes, that someone could will get tired from it:)
