People have been wanting to fan favorite you, I have been wanting to too.

Ranking by favs alone can be very tedious, getting fans can bump you up big time. You can look at wasi-bi's page, if you need an example.

Yeah, author favs would help. I rank up really slowly too since I don't have many author favs, except sarahtaylor like 4 times XD. But it doesn't really matter in the long run.

The ranking system functions like an RPG game leveling up system, the higher your rank is the slower it moves to the next rank. It requires less EXP to reach the early levels and the EXP needed increases as you move up the leveling stair, think about it like this and it'll make sense.
