View Full Version : What's your favorite sleeper?
Ok, for the n00bs out there that are not so knowledgeable on video games, a sleeper is a game that received outstanding reviews from critics but didn't exactly sell too much; some sleepers made only $250,000.
For me, it has to be Freedom Fighters for PS2, Xbox, GC, and PC. What made it so great was that it was simple to get into, especially for a tactical, squad-based shooter. The controls were great, not perfect, but it had the right scheme to make it functional. The story wouldn't of won any awards but it did drive you enough to see what happened at the end, which still left a lot of questions unanswered. The main feature that should of been huge was multiplayer, which was a blast and hilarious to play; it was beyond good enough for Xbox Live.
P.S.: Runner-up (ICO for PS2)
So if you guys don't mind, say what yours is and explain why it deserved a whole lot better. Thanks!

Freedom fighters was a blast, but my favorite sleeper would have to be Jet Set Radio Future.
It was launch title for the xbox, and it a a really really large environment to explore and it was a fun and addicting game. (JSRF was a sleeper, right?)

Beyod Good and Evil
Phantom Dust
Ico
Oddworld Stranger's Wrath
Shadow Hearts (it mainly flew under the radar because it was released around the same time as Final Fantasy X  )
Final Fantasy IX, my fav sleeper, which was overlayed by the release of the PS2. People address the game as kiddy; it is cartoony like old FF, but not kiddy, its isn’t for teens who like dark, gritty visuals, it’s an all age game like Ocarina and KH.
The game is a drop more linear than VII, VII was still linear though, but IX is much more accessible, better put togther gameplay, bigger, better visuals, better translation, and better orchestrated sound and more emotion, comical, the story also has better character development, dialogue and twists and the game has more imaginary locations, VII had only two imaginary location, Midgar and gold saucer. IX is better in every comparison of way. VII wasn’t revolutionary, neither was IX but it has less flaws like no bad translation, mild sexist character design (Tifa's 24-7 pointy wet T-shirt ) and the second disc being backtracking mostly which was the flaws of VII. The only emotion VII has been Aerith.IX had a better standard.
Journalists claiming FFVII to be one of the best games ever, disregarding IX, and saying it’s the best is one of the very things that is wrong with journalism today, another thing would be the Wind Waker receiving excellent reviews despite the last third which was just fishing treasure from the ocean.
Opinions sure, VII was great but theres no reason VII deserved this mainstream recognition and not IX.

i would have said beyond good and evil but its been mentioned already a few times, so technically it isn't much of a sleeper anymore.
shadow of the colossus isn't really a sleeper, but it's not nearly as popular as it should be.
others:
legend of mana
kirdby crystal shards
the hobbit
ffcc is underrated as well
and i'm a sucker for harry potter: quidditch world cup.
the biggest sleeper for me however is where in time is carmen sandeigo

:D
and anybody remember HOVER?
it was a collect-the-flag sort of maze racer that i think came with windows98. aaahhh... good times.

I would have to say FarCry if it is a sleeper. I had the game but I didnt know anyone else that had it. The game has great graphics and the gameplay is completely different than anyother game I have ever played.

the games aren't necessary sleepers, but they aren't universally popular, its uaually only tales fans that get tales games.

Legacy of kain games are the bigest sleeper, the games have amazing voice acting and great story line and good gameplay as well . But to bad the games are unpopular !
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne is also a good sleeper as well .

Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour for the DS.
it has amazing graphics, it's faithful to the anime, has a ton of cards (over 2000), great use of touch screen, and great for deck-building.
There are some great YGO games for different consoles.
Lots of games for the GBA.
A couple for the DS.
Dawn of Destiny for the Xbox (fucking sweet game!)
Duelists of the Roses for the PS2
Power of Chaos for the PC
Yugioh online for PC (that is a brilliant game, let me assure you)
Yu-Gi-Oh! games are extremely underrated. WHY?
People don't watch the Pokemon anime. BUT they play the games.
People don't watch the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. BUT they DON'T play the games.
That's not fair, i think people should give the games a chance.

Dude, I had Duelists of the Roses. I have to admit, it had alot of strategy invloved in it due to you had to move your cards around and cast spells in certain areas and not to mention that it had some sweet attack graphics.

Here my favorite sleeper:
Ristar.
This great game was a classic and fun game to play. It has very good graphics for the Sega Genisis and has great gameplay. Also had some sweet music which is rare on a Sega Gensis.
This game had me playing untill I got a n64, it that damn good. But it a sleeper 'cause of one thing. The Playstation. If the Playstation didn't come out that year, the game would have sell great, and it would have been a hit! That is not only because it was made by the orginal Sonic Team, but to most who had a genesis, it was a classic.
