As far as help goes, use an official template. They can be found in the simple needs and templates only threads. Use GIMP or photoshop. Never use Paint. If you receive criticism, don't be a jerk about it. Take their advice and work from it. They've all been here and know what they're doing. Most anything you need can be found in the forums. That's all I have to say. Just practice ;)

In addition to what koopa said I would also go to some non-box related gfx sites and take some tutorials on filters they can help with backgrounds but yeah take criticism and dont be an @$$ about it also yeah templates only has about all of the templates and simple needs has loads of logos and remember to look through the entire thread before requesting something

Your first box is your most important. Spend time on it, and when you get feedback, don't lash out at anyone. If you disagree with somebody's advice, simple say so calmly. I know when I first joined, I thought that all the feedback I got was unfair, and that the people where just not being nice to me since I was new. Looking back now, I realize that they were really helping. I suggest you do the same and take all the criticism you can get.

Also, use god quality pics, templates, and logos.

If you're trying to blend two pics together, make sure there is no cut-off line from the two pics.

And finally, I suggest posting your box in the forums first.

And above all: Have fun. :D

I was the same as Bob. It the advice sounds harsh at first, but in the end you'll know what NOT to do....so it all works out. You can look at the first boxes of anyone here...we all sucked at first, and we all.....well, at least me.....admit it. Take your time, don't rush, and try not to do the same thing that someone else has done (i.e. the same pic)

Yes, Crayon Man posted some great templates in that thread. Don't forget to give credit. ;)
Also, GIMP is pretty easy to learn with practice. A lot of the stuff you'll need is on the left module. And the effects and other stuff is in the main module where the art is. The top bar will have buttons across the top such as Script-Fu. Using filters is good for customization, but don't overdo it. :)

Guy's, thanks for this but can I please just have a simple walk through guide, for someone who has never done anything with photo shop and so on, such as:
1. Open Gimp,
2. Go to file-new, set width-height to what ever it should be for a game case.
3. Open the template you have downloaded, (for me the Blu-ray 2 box.
4. Then tell me how to do thing such as resize the Playstation 3 side-loco, pictures and so on.
that's the sort of thing I'm asking for, many thanks for the help so far guys :D.

In that order:
1) Um, yeah...Just open up GIMP like you would anything else.
2) A good size I sometimes use is 420 x 620.
3) Just go to File - Open as Layer and it should come in.
4) To scale, you should see a picture that shows a little box going into a bigger box.
I think that covers it.

How can I make images bigger or smaller because the Blu-ray box is smaller than the Playstation side-bar.

it should be noted to ignore trolls and n00bs such as ranmakuu, people like him just spam and act like a jackass to everyone for no reason. if you ever see anyone like him, just ignore him.
