Just because he was nice about taking the mic from her doesn't mean its nice to say someone else had the best video while your getting the award. No one likes Beyonce anymore. I don't know a single person that listens to her. Everyone and their mother likes T Swift. I don't listen to her but its just respect.

The Lady GaGa performance was morbid. I had a D: face the whole time.

I certainly never DISLIKED Beyonce, but I never LIKED her either. Seeing this, however, makes me LOVE her. Awesome.

It's even worse here. Our daily radio routine consists of Kings of Leon, Lady Gaga, La Roux, JLS, Beyonce/Rihanna/Leona Lewis (they're all the same) and usually the odd other pop/R&B singer. Even on our rock station (Kerrang) you'd be lucky to find anything interesting. I was working with my dad a few months back and we'd listen to Kerrang while working (it was the best we had, and better than silence) and it was nothing but Green Day, Papa Roach and Linkin Park's new single (I'll admit I like it, but it got really annoying after a few plays).

Oh and inb4 the "don't listen to the radio" comeback. It doesn't just work like that.

The music that's played on the radio isn't as bad as people think. There come a few songs on stations that you don't like, so that's why you change the station.

The Lady Gaga performance was quite morbid, as my sister described. I didn't really like the song, but I thought the performance was executed awesomely.

and no, it doesn't work like that. It's not like the top 10 songs will be on Heart FM and the next few will be on Smooth and the next bunch on Kerrang... it's sorted by GENRES.

Those songs are on the radio because they're accessible and catchy and friendly to all audiences... that in no way justifies them being good or bad.

Or you could make the effort to stop using the radio as a hold-your-hand guide and find some music yourself. There is an absolute universe of greatness out there that is just waiting for you to unearth*. Believe me, it feels SO much more satisfying when you're surfing the Internet and you discover a much less popular band (I'm not necessarily talking raw black metal obscure.) and love a song than to hear it on the radio and think "Oh, I like this one". There are heaps of great musicians from all genres, yes that includes pop.

Well what music do you suggest?

Well, here's an idea. Do you have a Last.fm? If not, get one. After scrobbling your library (takes a couple of minutes, tops) it gives you heaps of reccomendations, it can be really handy.

I'm not going to try and get you into my music, I think you should be able to listen to what already fits your taste. Sure, I could show you a great thrash metal band, but you might be better off with a really good pop artist who isn't quite as mainstream. And since I don't listen to pop... I can't help you.

all that "metalcore" and "trash metal" shit is just terrible. Essentially it's Emorock with simple fast guitar riffs and a guy vomiting into the mic.

Classic Metal bands probably feel terrible and let down for inspiring that stuff :(

The only metal band out of those is Bodom. And yes, they suck. (they do now, anyway. Their old stuff was OK)

Also I do wish people would stop calling Thrash Metal "Trash Metal". I don't know if it's an intentional typo or not, and I know it's only small, but it can be a huge annoyance especially since "Trash" is basically another word for bad, rubbish, crap, etc.

Metalcore can be awfully generic and in a lot of cases plain horrible but there are a few gems that stand out from the shit. Also "Emo Rock" is COMPLETELY different to metalcore. Just because emos listen to metalcore, and a lot of metalcore bands have emo lyrics/image (i.e. BFMV), it doesn't mean they're emo. Emo isn't just a way of classifying a band based on image and non-musical properties (i.e. Shock Rock), it's a type of Alternative Rock with some Post-Hardcore influences (only in a few bands, like MCR). Oh, and the "guy vomiting into the mic" stereotype? Really? That one's old, dude. If you think a band with screaming vocals is just a guy yelling random crap into the microphone then you simply don't understand it. If you don't understand it, you obviously don't know much about it.

By the way, sorry for the rant. I know you weren't trying to start an argument, but I hate seeing people come up with stuff like that, saying metal sucks because of a few rock/hardcore bands.

Nah, it's all good. You're entitled to your opinion. I personally think all of those bands sound terrible and don't deserve to be classified in the same overall genera as Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin.

Underoath are alright, I've only heard a few of their songs though. I like a couple of tracks from BFMV and some of Bodom's pre-Blooddrunk material but other than that they can suck a dick.

Hate to be a nazi and all but they technically could be classified as "metal." Definitions change so they may not meet all the criteria of current metal bands (or even older ones), but they do fall under that HardRock/ClassicMetal Category.

Led Zeppelin are a classic rock band, they write classic rock riffs and their songs are structured like classic rock songs... or rather, classic rock songs are made like them. You can't just go look on Wikipedia and see "heavy metal" or see them in the metal section of a music store and let that decide for you. Led Zeppelin aren't metal, AC/DC aren't, The Who aren't, Deep Purple aren't. They might have all had big influences on metal bands who were soon to come, but that doesn't mean anything for genre classification.

Yeah, but they always weren't "classic." Back then they were the definition of Metal. You see it's not like the genera came out of nowhere. Hard rock slowly evolved into that offshoot. Obviously the Definition of Heavy Metal wasn't complete at the time because the genera wasn't fully formed so they may not fit the criteria of the final product known as Metal.

I'm not saying the examples I named should be the face of original metal music. I should have used a better example. You're right and I'm right so to speak :o

It was bands like The Beatles, Hendrix, The Who and Zeppelin who would inspire some of the earlier metal bands like Black Sabbath and Motorhead. If anything, I would say Black Sabbath were the first "true" metal band. Sure, some of those others may have had elements which would be seen in metal, but Sabbath were the first to be 100% metal. People get metal and hard rock confused all the time, and that really gets on my nerves.
