I found this amazing tutorial on how to create a planet from scratch. No images were used in this, all done by me.
Also, this could be used as a wallpaper if you have an unsualy small resolution.

If you have Paint.NET. Also you will need to download some plugins. I will get the link in a minute.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q227/slimd1995/fuckingplanet.pngNot too bad. I take it this is your first planet?
Planets are easy to make, but difficult to perfect. Here is one my my "better" looking sets of planets.

hey, that's real nice slimd!
but Crotale, oh man, MAKE A NEW BOX NAOZ!
Damn Crotale, that looks so amazing and atmospheric. And I agree, you need to make a new box!

Thanks guys. I'd make another box, but after the last one only got a few views and faves, I don't really have the desire to do it. This place feels more like a popularity contest than an art site in that regard. Call me jaded, but that is how I feel right now.

Why do you use PDN? Why not go with the Gimp? Gimp has much more powerful tools than PDN and there are more user made extras. What is the advantage to using PDN over Gimp? They are both free.

I don't know. I'm just used to it. And I don't really like the interface of GIMP.
Also, I edited the wallpaper. Credit to Js2Kings for the usename logo

Also, I think crotale uses GIMP.

Try adding a shadow over the planet itself, keeping in mind the position of the sun. Try using the technique used in this tutorial, its very effective:
http://dinyctis.deviantart.com/art/Planet-Tutorial-3131869
Click on the image to enlarge, its a big load but worth it. Plus you can save it as one big image.
Also, a good program to use when creating planets with foreground scenery is Terragen, a 3D terrain creator and editor:
http://www.planetside.co.uk/
You just cut out the sky and add your planet, again, keeping in mind the position of the sun.
I haven't tried the new one but the classic/original version is pretty good. Classic also doesn't do trees and stuff but you can just add them in with photoshop. And i think its free too but don't quote me on that.
EDIT: Everyone should check out the image gallery at the Terragen site, its amazing how realistic some of the images look.

Also, I think crotale uses GIMP.Generally a combination of Photoshop, Lightroom, Corel Painter and a Wacom Tablet.

Sounds like a light rendering program.
But is it?

I use Lightroom to bring more "life" to my images. It is much easier to make overall tweaks to my images in Lightroom than in Photoshop, plus, in LR I can have multiple virtual copies and see how all the versions appear without eating up additional hard drive space or struggling to keep track of everything.
Lightroom is a cool program. I used to have a trial version. Like every Adobe product, it's pretty overpriced, though.

For me, Lightroom is worth every penny.
