Ideas for New Features

Well over the past, say two weeks i've been here, i've made alot of new friends and have been accepted into your comunity nicely :)

Although the site is well kept, and clean, it site seems like it needs new features, and i've made this thread to let you all give your ideas for new features that the admin might listen to and include next time he updates...;)

My ideas are;

An "Authors Comments" box.
This is where the author gets to comment on their box, so that they dont have to post it as if it were a normal comment. For example, the authors comment box would be on the "Add Box" page. And would be above all comments on the page in its own Box.

A Rating System
A simple rating system. Lets people rate your Box Art with 1 - 5 stars.

"Edit this Box" Feature
Frees up bandwidth etc..
Instead of OR as well as updating your box, you can simply re-upload it over the box you want changed.
Also lets you change your "Authors Comments" (if that were ever added.

"Delete/Edit Comments" Function
Lets you delete those unwanted comments on your Box Art page.
Also lets you delete or edit the comments you have give other peoples Box Arts.

Agreed a nice feature that would be and it definitely makes it easier to navigate through users’ relevance to the box.

The problem with a rating system is that some people have too ridiculous standards and there’s also some trolls/ noobs like Katamari boy of his day who were just regularly set out to cause trouble and I wouldn’t want a 2 star or newb low-rating a good box art for the sake of it; people could post a star on their comments.

Bad behavior shouldn’t be compromised where there are such pros but in this case trolls taking advantage of the star system to cause anger is an exception to compromising them.
I say an option on user settings to have stars or not then, then theres freedom in the users if they want a user mark on their box art or not.
Words are the best harmless way to judge something.

But the trolls (way to put them) screwing around with the deletes comments would be annoying.
The freedom to comment on a site like this is a good activity so if people want to private their boxes and no comments from members; they should just submit their box arts on Photo bucket.

Not a bad idea... I think what I'll do is just have it automatically separate the first comment if it's made by the box author. That way no new functionality is required and it'll retroactively apply to all old boxes/comments.

Then there's no way to know which comments were for which box. Plus it's often useful to see the history of changes.

Then comments would lose relevancy. People would just delete any negative comments and those are useful to see what people like and don't like. Also particularly important when someone is outed for stealing someone's box or such. I get rid of trolls when I see them, but other than that, you have to take the good with the bad. And you can always request that I delete a comment if you thnk it's inappropriate.

how about you can only delete and edit your own comments and not others

while we are at it....what about an 'other' tag up there with th major consoles tag so people can have the chance to post things pther then vgboxart and still have comments from people thay already know.

I think Dead Pixels means partly that maybe we should be able to replace boxes with another, if its takes a previous box place it won’t show up on the daily box gallery on the main page, so there’s no repeats of boxes there.

Please if there’s going to be a five star rate system, could it be customizable for the box from the users?
One thing I want is a particular box to be judged by the audience it’s aimed for kind of.

For example I want a box art for a Final Fantasy game to be judged by people with knowledge of that series, the users who would get an idea of what would make a FF game look good in relation to the style of the series.

Not some one giving it a one star because they think it looks crap even in the right style and profession of a Final Fantasy box because they know no better.
To put it bluntly I don’t want a newbie giving a good box a bad score because they know no better me trying not to sound stuck up.:rolleyes:

TEG, you are right. But it's bound to happen.
I've been on other websites where people rate things and i've seen people give bad ratings out of spite AND even out of pure jealousy.

If the community gets big enough, I'd definitely consider branching out... For now though, feel free to put any non-box art stuff in the forum. Could set up a separate forum for it if a lot is being posted.

As far as the concerns about ratings, some of the crap will happen. But if enough people are using the system it shouldn't be too much of a problem. It will outweigh the idiots.

Rank each artist by their work. Use a system like Ebay. Start off with 100% and you get a possitive or negative only, with a coment next to it. A negative takes away a % of 100 and a possitve adds to it. The critics rank will be next to his/her coments as well to show credibility. Set a limit on Noobs. They must have 5 box arts of their own and at least a rank of 75% to leave a review. If the drop below 50% they are removed from the site.

I know my work is noobish and I know some of you just slap a picture in a template and call it good. We all just try to improve other peoples work. The artists with talent always stick out.

I would prefer it if ‘ok’ was ‘good’ so it sounds more encouraging instead of inadequate ok

The new ranking system is cool and so is the recentaly updated section.
